A St. Martinville man’s key defense in the shooting death of his pregnant fiance and unborn child is that synethetic marijuana caused him to go temporarily insane...

McKeel is accused of killing Parker on Jan. 18 with a shotgun blast to the face at close range at Parker’s mother’s mobile home off Our Lady of the Lake Road in St. Martinville.

The trial of Joshua McKeel, a St. Martinville man who allegedly shot and killed his pregnant fiancee in 2012, should commence sometime by the end of the year...

Cedars said it's unlikely McKeel will stand trial before November... because of the backlog of cases before it.

Joshua McKeel, 25, had agreed to plead guilty to manslaughter and first-degree feticide earlier this year in connection with the death of 19-year-old Hannah Parker, but he rejected the plea deal at the last minute. His trial was re-set several times.

He then decided to plead guilty, which he did before District Judge Greg Aucoin.

Following his plea, McKeel was sentenced to 30 years at hard labor on the manslaughter charge, and 10 years at hard labor on the feticide charge. The sentences will run concurrently, or at the same time. McKeel will receive credit for time served; he has been in jail since the day Parker died in January 2012.
