From what I can surmise from SSDI indexes, the following is a little bit more information about John Parkinson. NamUs and familysearch.org differ by two weeks on the date found/death date listed, but everything else matches and I think it is him:

first name: John
middle name:
last name: Parkinson
name suffix:
birth date: 28 August 1920
social security number: 123-xx-xxxx
place of issuance: New York
last residence: Charleston, South Carolina
zip code of last residence: 29403
death date: 12 August 2000
estimated age at death: 80

NamUs lists the date found as August 29, 2000.

There was a John Parkinson from upstate New York who served in the US Marine Corps in World War II and Korea.

I do not have much more information on him, but he was living as late as 1985.

If the Namus folks were to contact the Veterans Administration and give them this man's name and SSN, maybe they could find out if he is the Marine, or if VA has any information regarding relatives.

There seems to be very little information that fits this gentleman. But there is this record:

John Parkinson
Arrival Date: 25 Jan 1943
Birth Year: abt 1920
Age: 23
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Greenock, Scotland
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Queen Elizabeth

Would fit in nicely with his ssn being issued in New York.

And where did that photo come from?

A middle initial would really help narrow down results on this one, if available, given how common this name probably is.

Here are two John Parkinson listings I found from the 1920 and 1930 census with estimated birth years of 1920:

What bugs me on our John Parkinson is that he is exactly the right age to have served in WWII, but no record that can be tied to him.

It seems to me he should have at least registered for the draft, but I can't find anything that I can tie to him.

Tifflee:

I have been working on the two you provided above off and on. They look like they could be matches. I'm trying to see if I can trace what became of them, so maybe I can rule them in or out as our John Parkinson.

The New York 1940 census has been indexed and I found this:

Name Age
Richard Parkinson 50
Agnes Parkinson 44
Richard Parkinson 24
Ruth Parkinson 23
John Parkinson 20
Edward Parkinson 18
Mary Darsow 76

So, the John Parkinson above was living in the same place in 1940. His mother's maiden name was Darrow apparently as Mary Darrow (from looking at the record, not Darsow as above) is listed as the mother-in-law. Mary Darrow was born in Ireland.

He was not working as of 1940 even though he was 20 years old. I find that odd. It was still the Great Depression, but still.

I wonder if perhaps he had a disability? There are some codes on the census form, I will see if I can determine what they mean.

For example, his education was listed as C-4?

But so far, all the clues fit. He registered for social security in New York. Born In Pennsylvania.

This is the one we discussed last night and decided the New York one was the best fit. Right? I asked Carl to see if he could clean up the picture so we could determine what is written on the photo.

Even when you zoom in, It's still pretty tough to see what is written. It might be "J M Parkinson".

now it makes sense . . . if I could just find a yearbook.

I can't find him off of the namus link anymore. Was he perhaps claimed by someone, or am I just having problems?

Looks like it is a resolved. Need a mod to move.

One more headed home.

Good to hear that someone has aparently claimed John Parkinson's remains. I wish we knew more behind the story.

Semper Fi, Marine.
