Some exciting news was released today

http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Raptor-Resource-Project/103786266324668

For the 2012 nesting season, we will refer to the first egg to hatch as D12. The second will be D13. The third eaglet hatched, if we are so fortunate, will be D14.

We use nomenclature for the following reasons:

+ D identifies the nest site – Decorah, Iowa
+ Traditional names can create an undue tendency to anthropomorphize. While the human emotion that may be attached to the eaglets is understandable, an alpha-numeric system for referencing them may help us distance ourselves to observe the wonder of wildlife and nature at work.
+ Beginning at 12 honors the 11 known successful fledges at the nest.
+ This reference system will allow RRP to integrate their findings more easily with other researchers.
+ This will be easily continued from year to year.

Thank you! I love watching these babies grow up!

So cool! Hi again my birdie friends :) Cant wait to watch this lovely pair again this season!!

YAAAAYYYY!! This is so fun to watch and really made coming to work exciting. :) Thanks for the thread!!

I can't access that fb link from work. Does it say when she's expected to lay the eggs?

Nope it doesn't say yet when she's expected to lay

I can't remember when it was last year. I remember snow and it being cold but that's about all I remember. I hope it's soon! How do they even know she's pregnant for sure? Sorry if that's a stupid question but I don't know much about this.

Wasn't it in March? I recall watching the nest in respite from the ongoing Fukushima disaster.

And on that note, may this spring be much more ordinary!!

I believe February last year was when the first egg was laid.

I see they are now live streaming! Just saw mama hanging in the nest and getting it prepared :)

Cool! So it looks like we only have a few weeks to wait. I just saw mama (or dad, I only saw the butt so I couldn't tell which one it was) in the nest. I lub them!

It's great to see them isn't it. I saw both of them in there for a split second. They are so beautiful and such good parents!

ETA: They are both in the nest right now eating! Daddy brought mama a rabbit.

:) Thank you for the reminder. My grandson and I loved it last year. He would laugh so hard when the eaglets were fussing with each other or flapping their little wings. :)

i'm so sad.....new job this year and the streaming video is block :(

I'm so sad for you! That kept me entertained during work so much last year!!

Don't worry, we'll post lots of updates so you can follow along here. :D

I missed their lunch but it looks like they demolished the rabbit. All I see now is a nest covered in fur.

A bit long but nice to see them again:
