Poor baby froze to death in the home. One year old is in critical condition. The window was left open in freezing temperatures.

Someone requested an ambulance and these poor kids were found frozen. At the scene was mom's boyfriend one Richard Tilden, Jr. who was drunk. He was arrested on a domestic abuse charge.

Mom, Esther Edwards Gust was later arrested on the same charges and has been released.

Some young kid sold illegal liquor to Tilden and has been busted. The police in this article remind us that bootlegging is not a victimless crime.

Esther Edwards Gust is a school teacher and in the middle of a divorce. Richard Tilden is her unemployed boyfriend whom she has known her whole life. His wife died last year. He and his three boys moved in with Gust.

Tilden called 911. Cops came to find a room that was 30 BELOW! Tilden on the steps holding a naked three year old who was not breathing. He said earlier he had opened the window to air the rooms as the girls regularly wet the bed. He did not close it.

Do you bleed with hypothermia? One child had blood coming from her clothing which they found and dried blood on her mouth.

How very sad. She's obviously an intelligent woman who is dedicated to keeping her heritage alive and caring about the environment. No doubt she is a good teacher.

While the situation is much different - in Melville's novel, 'Redburn,' quoted from below, the protagonist sees a woman and her three children starving to death in 19th century Liverpool, their only protection a hole - a vault - just below street level, these words, after the dead have been taken away, always come to mind when reading about cases like this one:
But again I looked down into the vault, and in fancy beheld the pale, shrunken forms still crouching there. Ah! what are our creeds, and how do we hope to be saved? Tell me, oh Bible, that story of Lazarus again, that I may find comfort in my heart for the poor and forlorn. Media reports that the children were beaten have drawn a strong response from law enforcement officers involved in the case.

"My office has never released any information about anyone being beaten," said North Slope Borough Chief of Police Leon Boyea.
"Under the second-degree assault statute, you could be charged for physically creating an environment in which someone was seriously physically injured.
It doesn't always mean you were struck."

Both were charged under the subsection of the second-degree assault pertaining to a person "recklessly causing serious physical injury to another person" but not the section pertaining to "intent to cause physical injury to another person, that person causes physical injury to another person by means of a dangerous instrument."

It is minus ten here..I am inside, with heat, and it is cold. minus 30? I cannot imagine!
 
There truly are some seriously stupid people in the world.
 
Having read the BF's history you cannot tell me that there was no violence directed towards these poor children. Dreadful, truly dreadful
 
I have so many questions!!
Where were his little boys?
Does anyone believe that he undressed the little girls and stripped their beds before realizing that the 3 year old was dead? I don't buy it!
Is alcohol illegal in Alaska?! Were they in a dry county? Did they buy bootleg just to save some money and not have to pay state tax?
 
Barrow is dry. They have a ban on the sale of alcohol although you can purchase it elsewhere and bring it in.

Only googled, but I can't find anything that suggests hypothermia itself causes bleeding.

Why were these kids not dressed? They wet the bad according to the boyfriend. He was airing the room. Do you air rooms in Alaska like that? In sub freezing temps? Maybe he undressed them because they had wet to bed, and left them with the open window or maybe something ever more sinister came to play? Why would you take the clothing off a child if that is how it happened who wasn't flippin breathing?

Well we do know he was seriously drunk alright. Still drunk hours later at the police station.
 
I understand the reasons for dry towns, - but when the booze does come in , people have lower body alchohol tolerance - and it's always a binge, so blackouts are to be expected. And you have hide such habits or addictions.
More sad than bad- imo
If it was'nt a dry town, there would there would probably be more counciling, policing, but i don't know the town.

I don't understand the reason for dry towns. I'm not much of a drinker, maybe a glass or two of wine per year, but it just causes more trouble when it's made illegal. When all the areas around it are legal, it makes no sense at all. Just strikes me as some busybody being in everybody else's business.

The investigation of the beating death of a Barrow child and the battering of the child's baby sibling took another twist Monday when Anchorage police arrested the children's mother on a warrant from Barrow.

Esther Edwards-Gust, who turned 28 Saturday, was charged with two counts of felony assault, just like her boyfriend, Richard Tilden Jr., 28.

Tilden has a record going back to age 17 of alcohol violations, drunk driving and assault in Dillingham, where he grew up and played high school basketball, according to state court records that match his name and date of birth. His wife, Michelene, who died last summer at 28, according to public records, filed for a domestic violence restraining order against him in 2006.

His father, Richard Tilden Sr., now deceased, advocated creation near Dillingham of a "spirit camp" in 1995 to help local people recover from alcohol addiction.

Court records show Edwards-Gust filed for divorce from her husband, Demitri, in May. The case is still pending.
