Police arrested a 35-year-old man after the bodies of two girls and their grandmother were found in a Quebec home, local media reported Saturday.

The bodies of Juliette Fillion, 8, and her sister, Laurence, 11, were found alongside their 70-year-old grandmother Friday evening in a home in the small town of Saint-Romain, about 142 miles east of Montreal in Quebec’s Eastern Townships.

Canadian Press reported the victims were shot, but police would not confirm this.

Man arrested for murder of his mother, young nieces in Quebec village

MONTREAL — A 35-year-old man from Quebec's Eastern Townships is facing three counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of his mother and two young nieces.

Pascal Morin was arrested on Friday night after the bodies of his 70-year-old mother and two nieces, ages 8 and 11, were found inside a home in St. Romain, a small village located about 150 kilometres south of Quebec City.

Police were called to the house that Morin and his mother shared at 6 p.m. Friday. They found the bodies and took Morin into custody, questioning him for most of the night.

The two girls, whose paternal grandfather is mayor of the town, were staying with Roy-Morin while their mother was in Mexico and their father working on the family farm.

I'll take a guess and say he wanted money for drugs. Mom says no. Kills mom. Girls witnessed it and he killed them.

:furious:

None of the media reports said who placed the 911 call Friday evening so I think the 35-year-old uncle may have. Police discovered the bodies after a 911 call was placed around 6 p.m. Friday and moments after the gruesome discovery, officers found Morin on site and arrested him.

There were early reports that the victims had been shot, but Asselin confirmed Saturday that no firearms were involved in the incident.

The uncle, who lives with his mother, a retired teacher and widow, suffers from mental illness. Unclear whether the uncle is related to the children's mother or father.

The children's mother was on vacation in Mexico and returned home to a grieving town. Father at work.

Bodies removed from the house on Saturday and an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

<snipped>

Pascal Morin, 35, has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder. He is scheduled to appear at the Sherbrooke courthouse on Monday.

Media outlets in the region are reporting Pascal Morin suffered from mental illness, possibly schizophrenia.

We are heartbroken here," local restaurant owner Michelle Lessard said. "These are people that we knew very well." Three psychologists will be sent to the local school Monday morning for support.

A 36-year-old Quebec man who butchered his own mother and two young nieces in February won't be going to prison because he was found not criminally responsible.

A judge on Monday agreed with experts who said Pascal Morin, 36, was deranged and confused when he killed Ginette Roy-Morin, 72, Juliette Fillion, 8, and Laurence Fillion, 11.

Psychiatrist Pierre Gagne testified Morin is a schizophrenic who was totally confused at the time.
