an anthropologist identified the remains as belonging to an African-American woman who was 35-to-50 years old at the time of her death.

This is the second time in the past year that skeletal remains of an unidentified black female were found in that area. The other case is detailed in the thread linked below:

KS KS - Sedgwick County - Human Skull in creek bed, April 2011

I can only come up with one black woman in that age range missing from the state of Kansas.

Cheney KS is about 165 miles from Topeka.

According to this article this has been solved, kind of an odd story though.

Bizarre story:
Investigators have solved the mystery of a human skull found near Cheney. Officials tell Eyewitness News someone who used to live at the property where the skull was found says they buried the skull in the yard.

That former resident says the skull had been in their family's possession since it was left on their parents' doorstep in Circleville, Kansas on Halloween night back in 1949.

P.S. Welcome to WS, ksprincess!

I'd say it's probably resolved. That story sounds so unlikely that it's probably true.

Returning this thread to the UID area. Police want help in identifying this UID skull.

Jackson County sheriff’s officials are seeking the public’s help in identifying a human skull that formerly belonged to a family in the Circleville area that was found recently in Sedgwick County.

....the skull had been in a Circleville-area family’s possession since 1949.

Have they said if they suspect the skull to be from the 40s, or from much earlier? If it's from earlier than it may be the skull of a slave, in which case we'll likely never know who she was. Even if it's from the 40s it may well have been stolen from a grave. Is it possible her family couldn't afford to bury her, so they had to give her body to science? I find that more likely than the scenario that she was murdered within a year or two of the skull being left on the doorstep and she might actually be a missing person.

I hope she rests in peace. Life was almost certainly hard for her, whether she lived in the 40s or earlier.
