Dahmer hunting grounds tour

The question is how soon is too soon? I always thought that great respect should be observed as long as anyone who knew the victims was still alive which is the case here. However, is writing a book about the case that much different? After all, the author is profiting from the tragedy. I think the rules are a little different if the victim is a gangster or a public figure like JFK. That said, I've excitedly watched movies and read books about recent cases so I have no license to be sanctimonious. It's a tough call.

I see no different between this tour and the tours you can take to follow Jack the Rippers steps. It maybe wrong but I would go on this tour.

Too soon, imo.

His victims were young, as was he. Family, friends, school mates, shop keepers, policemen and women, correctional officers, officers of the court, probably most are still around... Yep, too soon. Especially to be promoted by Groupon! Tacky. (Nothing like searching for a place to eat, then end up considering a local serial cannibal killer all at the same site! Yum. Let's make an evening of it. Call your friends. )

I think book reading is another level, entirely-- it is a private act that doesn't intrude on the sensibilities of others. Plus, books are a means of information/education, not a thrilling evening out. jmo

I don't think Milwaukee needs this. :(

Dahmer's crimes absolutely devastated my community. Many of the victim's families lived in the area and I can only presume still do. Ambrosia Chocolate Co. was bought out and Dahmer's residence demolished. People have actively sought to diminish the stain that Dahmer left on the city.

I do not know if a lifetime is long enough but I believe this is nothing but a morbid distraction to the healing process that city is still undergoing.

Dahmer victim's sister calls walking tour 'evil'

By DINESH RAMDE
Associated Press

Janie Hagen's brother, 25-year-old Richard Guerrero, disappeared in 1988 and was one of the first young men Dahmer is known to have murdered. On Saturday, Hagen criticized the new walking tour as merely an attempt to make money by turning her brother's murder into macabre entertainment.

"This whole thing opens up a lot of old wounds, a lot of painful memories," Hagen said while holding a sign calling tour-organizer Bam Media and Marketing heartless. "It's that same hurt all over again."

I wonder too, for those who support this idea, if they even realize that one of Dahmer's victims was a child? I was friends with a girl who was friends with him. Konerak Sinthasomphone would be the same age as me had he survived.

He very nearly did escape. A witness called 911 to report a naked, beaten, disoriented man on the corner of 25th & State. When (unobservant, lazy and negligent) officers arrived Dahmer manipulated the situation by convincing them Konerak was his drunken adult lover. They handed him to his murderer.

He was 14 years old.

Saw this on local news tonight. I feel it is a disgrace to all his victims.
A victim's sister was protesting on TV about the tour and was rather upset.
It's all about money. I feel it is not an event to be glorified and we have to
remember they are in a sense celebrating a serial killer.

I totally disagree with anyone making a profit off of those that are victims.

I have to admit that when I first moved to Los Angeles, one of the first things I did was look up the address of the house where Sharon Tate and her friends were killed by the Manson family. (I had just read Bugliosi's Helter Skelter.)

Years later I drove by Nicole Brown Simpson's condo quite a few times (though to be fair, it was on my way to school and on a major through-street).

But as Quiche points out, I did so on my own. I drove by the houses without even stopping, for fear of disturbing the occupants or neighbors.

While not my finest hours, that's very different from the public ritual of a group tour. I'm not sure such a thing can be stopped, given our freedoms of expression, but I can understand why folks in Milwaukee may be upset.

I can understand curiosity.
To make a tour as in sight seeing........
I could never do that for a murderer.
I went to Gettysburgh battle field and I must say,
I could not enjoy it.
Spooked me outliterally, yet there are ghost tours......

Dumb idea. If you want to do the tour by yourself, like Nova did, that is different.

This sounds like one of those crazy FBI Stings where they nab like 20 to 30 criminals on the run where they like send them some fake idea .Yes u have won some cruise around the world just show up at such and such at 3:00 only for it to be a set up by the FBI before you board this bus for the serial killer tour .Everything on the bus will perfect for collecting fingerprints , then some fake FBI officers dress up like doctors to make everyone give blood so now they got your DNA and fingerprints all while your looking at old houses that u have no idea if dalhmour even lived lol I mean who;s gonna stand up and say hey that murder didn't take place in this house it was one street over ..thats a one way ticket to sing sing..my advice dont take the tour.

I assume everyone here knows that "horror tours" are already a cottage industry in Hollywood, yes? They use open-air double-decker buses and tour guides (i.e., out-of-work actors) with loud speakers.

For those who watched American Horror Story last season, one such tour was depicted in several scenes. It wasn't just an invention of the writers.

His last victim died in 1991, 21 years ago. I don't think it's too soon.

Victims are not only those who have been murdered 21 yrs ago, 10 years ago, 30 years ago, 2 weeks ago, yesterday.

They are also those that survive the pain and knowledge of a loved one brutally losing their life to a murderer for every day- every hour- every minute of their own life...even if they live to be 100.
Groupon lost my vote today.

I hope these 'tours' and various companies who hold them, rethink selling sensationalism and realize that money is not equal to the suffering of victims everywhere.

This kind of stuff makes my heart hurt. :(

JMOO, of course.

JMOO, of course.

Of course. Just wondering if it had been a victim's relative who started the tours, if your opinion would change.
Anyone know how long it was after MLK, JFK, or RK were assasinated before the sites became landmarks, and books written about the murders?
Can we agree that it was alot less than 21 years?

I find this thread and everyone's opinions fascinating. I can competely understand everyone's opinion and I don't really feel strongly one way or the other.

:waitasec:

These men were public figures-- our society had a relationship with them. Same goes for the Hollywood icons. Apples and oranges, at best. mo

I don't think so.The site of the St.Valentines day massacre is on a tour. Pearl Harbor is on a tour. It's been 21years. Who gets to decide how long? Before anyone can start tours we're supposed to research for living relatives? Which relatives? Immediate family or just anyone? The quickest way to get rid of something is to not buy into it. Don't take the tour.
