Blood found in school cubby house could be a murdered child

Blood found inside a school playground cubby house in Sydney's south-west may have come from a murdered child, police say.

A pool of blood, more than 30 centimetres wide and measuring about one to one-and-a-half litres, was found by teachers at Riverwood Public School on the inside floor of the cubby house in late January.

But besides determining that the blood belonged to a male person, and that the person could be a child or small adult because of the size of the cubby house, police said they had exhausted their leads.

"We are unable to say that the person is dead. We are saying it is a possible homicide. ... We have looked for another plausible explanation. At this point in time, we haven't got one," he said, adding that local police had been consulting the homicide squad.

But he conceded it was possible the wet weather during that time may have washed away evidence.

Detectives in Sydney's south-west have renewed their appeal for public help as they investigate the mysterious discovery of human blood in the playground of a Riverwood school.
"We've checked with hospitals across Sydney and local medical centres and there is no record of anyone being treated for an injury that might have resulted in such extensive blood loss.

"We're now treating this as a possible homicide and seeking public assistance to identify who the victim is. From our examination of the crime scene, we are of the belief the blood could possibly be from a child or small adult," he said.

Investigators have sifted through recent unsolved missing person cases and student absentee records from schools in the area as they try to progress their investigation.

"So far those inquiries have not provided any positive leads and that's why we are again turning to the public for help," Supt Blackmore said.
