Roofer leaps into tank of acid to rescue coworker in Clifton

A roofing contractor jumped into a tank of acid to save his coworker who had just fallen through the roof and into the vat 40 feet below Monday morning, fire officials said.

Rescue workers place the victim of an industrial accident in Clifton onto a helicopter that will take him to St. Barnabas Medical Center.

The roofer was working on the roof of Swepco Tube LLC, a metal tube manufacturing plant, when he fell into the tank of nitric acid, sustaining burns from head to toe about 8:40 a.m. The man’s coworker immediately jumped into the vat and was waist high in acid while he and three Swepco workers pulled the victim out, said Fire Chief Vince Colavitti.
