She’s a tiny brunette with brown eyes, barely 10, and she’s naked – posing for the man who raped her and traded her photo like currency with thousands of insatiable predators on Facebook.

It is just one photo among thousands of explicit images and videos of child sexual exploitation – all available on the social network 901 million users have come to know and love, Facebook. Most of America’s users have no idea that the social network is home to an enormous collection of unreported child *advertiser censored* and sexual violence.

This is an article that is great on research & detail, but IMO frustratingly naive in it's recommendations. Facebook cannot be expected to front the massive resources (take a look some time at how many images are uploaded to Facebook each day, and then think of how many people you'd have to hire to monitor said traffic) & commit violations of the privacy of innocent users in order for them to combat this problem.

Inexplicably, the writers of the article hit upon a much more realistic & effective solution but didn't even notice - they easily tracked down tons of these CP pages themselves. That is something that volunteer groups can do themselves (and of course report what they find to the authorities) instead of signing useless petitions. Of course, any 'CP hunters' would need to contact the authorities regarding their intentions beforehand, to avoid being targeted in sweep operations etc, and also so that they would have a ready channel of communication to enable swift responses.

This is not MSM guys. Any chance that MSM picked up the story and reported it somewhere?

There's this, but I wouldn't really call them MSM either.

ETA: Tabloid MSM? LOL. I don't see anything with a good link...but if the daily mail is accepted on other threads, it should be okay here, right?

A google search turns up a ton of MSM articles that basically just quote the WND article and follow along without corroborating anything to any great degree.

Here's what the one exception, the Huffington Post, had to say on the WND article itself, and the subject in general (for once they did their homework!):

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/07/facebook-child-porn_n_1496530.html

To boil it down - this isn't anything new, Facebook is actively engaged with the authorities, NCMEC, etc to combat it as well as can be expected...

Specifically, HuffPost has this to say about Facebook's efforts:

Among its efforts to keep child *advertiser censored* off its site is Facebook's longtime partnership with New York's Attorney General's Office, first forged with Andrew M. Cuomo back in 2007. The social network currently uses a database created by the New York Attorney General's Office, which contains the numerical fingerprints, or "hash values," of more than 8,000 child *advertiser censored* photos, to prevent the spread of these images on the site.

According to Facebook, if an account is suspected of involvement in "illicit activity," such as child *advertiser censored*, the site investigates "associated objects (groups, Pages, and images etc.) and associates." In addition, all accounts that have been disabled, removed from the site or found to be involved in child *advertiser censored* activity are preserved in order to aid law enforcement officials should an investigation ensue. The site often brings up such cases with both domestic and international law enforcement to further help in apprehending and convicting those behind the activity.

So, yeah...petitions & blogged expressions of outrage are pretty pointless, IMO. Being on the lookout for suspicious accounts, content etc & reporting potential abuse to the authorities IMO is still much more effective. Facebook is well aware that their actions (or lack thereof) in regards to this and many other issues are being closely scrutinized by activists & lawsuit hungry lawyers alike, and IMO that means that it is in their best interests to do as much as they realistically can.

In my lengthy history of using DM as a quoted source, there have been a handful of occasions when I saw the story referred to only there, at DM (and not also on at least one agreed-upon, non-tabloid, MSM link) Generally I refrain from quoting DM unless it can be backed up by other media accounts of the same story in MSM.
