One man is dead and seven others have been injured -- including a 13-year-old boy and a pregnant woman -- after gunfire rang out in a jam-packed Eaton Centre food court Saturday.

A 25-year-old man was pronounced dead on scene. He had been shot, Toronto police Const. Victor Kwong said.

A 13-year-old boy was also shot, he said. The boy and another victim, a 20-year-old man, are both in critical condition in hospital. Another injured was a pregnant woman, trampled as shoppers fled the mall. She went into labour and is also now in hospital. There is no word on her condition.

"A lot of innocent people were hurt," police chief Bill Blair said.

The shooter is still on the loose

Police have identified the man shot dead in Saturday’s bloody melee at the Eaton Centre as Ahmed Hassan, a 24-year-old Toronto man believed to have gang ties.

An arrest has been made in the Eaton Centre shooting, Toronto police said Monday.

Police sent a Twitter message at 7 a.m. to announce the arrest and scheduled a news conference for 2 p.m. to provide details.

Word came 36 hours after the crowded downtown mall erupted in pandemonium as a man opened fire in a food court, killing one man and wounding six other people.

“Whether this is a gang-motivated shooting has not been definitely determined,” Det. Sgt. Brian Borg, the lead homicide investigator of the case, said Sunday.

Nixon Nirmalendran, who was fighting for his life since the Eaton Centre shooting on June 2, died from his injuries Monday night.

Nirmalendran, 22, was gunned down along with Ahmed Hassan, 24, in the mall’s food court. The attack left him in grave condition with bullet wounds to his neck and chest.

From December 2014:

On Wednesday evening in a downtown courthouse just a short walk away from the Eaton Centre, a jury found Husbands, 25, guilty of two counts of second-degree murder, rejecting the defence argument that he was in a trauma-induced robotic state and not criminally responsible for his actions...

The Crown argued this was planned revenge on the men who had stabbed Husbands multiple times in an attack months before. The defence argued that Husbands, suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder after the stabbing, was so terrified when he saw his attackers threaten him as they entered the food court that he “zoned out.”

For gunning down two men in a crowded Eaton Centre food court — his reckless burst of bullets also striking a 13-year-old boy in the head — Husbands was sentenced to life in prison with 30 years before he could apply for parole.
