The wild fire near us has jumped from 70 to 100 acres in the last 4 hours, it is 103 degrees and the firefighters are still trying to contain. I offer prayers that everyone fighting these fires goes home safe at the end of it all.

The Crow Peak Fire has reached 100 acres in size with 25 percent containment.

Monday night's rainfall brought a little relief to the firefighting efforts, but today's red flag warning will test the crews as the work in high temperatures and dry conditions, according to the Great Plains Fire Information Center.

Today will see temperatures in the upper 90s and relative humidity around 10 percent. Firefighters will be working toward full containment today with aggressive suppression and improve hand and dozer lines.

This news pic is exactly what I can see from our driveway...lots of planes, copters and trucks, still more sirens.

We're East of here and the wind is blowing East @18mph, downwind, for the moment. Lots of smoke.

I'm about ready to start loading the truck and camper but we have had no warning about leaving. Watch and wait right now.

We are at 4700 feet and the fire is about 5500 feet.

Thanks guys, I just got back a little while ago, I had to get away for a bit from last night to today, the smoke was hurting my lungs. There are still some places on the rez where there is no wifi and I couldn't get the internet on my Iphone either.There is still smoke in the air but the fire is more than half contained. There are men and women fighting this fire and they are brave. The problem is that the flames jump form tree to tree and it is so steep climbing here.

The Crow Peak fire was 65 percent contained by Wednesday evening, according to reports from Great Plains Fire Information.

Though the fire's activity picked up and grew five acres to 130 acres overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning, crews kept it at 130 acres throughout the day.

Mop-up efforts have begun on the north and east sides of the fire.

Firefighters battling soaring temperatures Tuesday were offered something of a respite Wednesday, with temperatures hovering in the low to mid 80s during the afternoon.

This is a news pic from about 2 hours ago, as you can see there is a lot of smoke still in the air. We're not used to our air here looking like a city. :D

I thought I'd put this article up. One of the problems here is the mountain pine beetle is destroying the trees and then they become kindling. :( It is so sad to look out from your deck and see trees that were healthy a month ago and now they are brown. Anyone familiar with Aspen, Colorado, especially along I-70, has seen the destruction there. It is now here in the Black hills, this fire by us started because of lightening and is worsened by the infestation.

Thanks for the update and glad you are ok except for the smoke problem...hope they continue to get it cleared up...that picture does look a little better than the first one...thanks to all the great firefighters...so sad to see such a beautiful area burning...
 
Crow Peak firefighting has 'turned the corner' Our fire has been knocked down, still smoke in the air but not as bad. It is 80 percent contained, as of this evening.

There is another fire about 40 miles away from us, this one is 300 acres, 3 times the size of the one by us.

The Dakota Fire reaches 300 acres...The 300-acre Dakota Fire amassed a tower of smoke above the Black Hills on Wednesday as firefighters worked on the forest floor to secure its perimeter. The smell of smoke settled over Sheridan Lake as plumes rose above the trees.

Plane goes down fighting White Draw fire

A C-130 plane fighting the White Draw fire near Edgemont "went down" Sunday night, according to the Fall River County Sheriff's Office.

This 4th of July is fireworks free in the Black Hills.
 
We had a severe t-storm come through with high winds and lots of lightening, that may be the cause of the crash.

C-130 plane fighting the White Draw fire near Edgemont "went down" Sunday night, according to the Fall River County Sheriff's Office.

A helicopter was able to land near the Air Force plane and took three people to Custer to be transported by ambulance to Rapid City Regional Hospital for further medical treatment, the sheriff's office said.

A spokesman handling information for the White Draw fire said he was unable to confirm anything beyond the fact that a plane went down and search and rescue crews were working on the crash.

Thanks for the updates, Jacie. You live in a beautiful area! We travel up there often. Years ago, I watched the fireworks over MT Rushmore, and it was amazing. I'd love my son to see them sometime, but it's good they've cancelled them the last three years if there's high fire danger. In Colorado here, so familiar with the choking smoke and pine beetle kill. They're predicting monsoon rains here for the end of the week. Praying you guys get some relief there soon too, and that everyone is safe.

Stay safe in your area, too. We are usually on I-70 in the Aspen area every couple of years. What the pine beetle did there is awful. It is sad to see so many trees go brown.
 
The C-130 that went down is a military plane refashioned to fight fires. It is one of eight so-called Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System (MAFFS) planes in the country.

Bringing together the Department of Defense and U.S. Forest Service program, MAFFS aircraft provide additional aerial firefighting resources when commercial and private airtankers are no longer able to meet the needs of the Forest Service.

1:25 p.m. update: While the Air Force has declined to report on the status of the crew, relatives of a Mooresville, N.C., man say he was killed in the crash.

Paul Mikeal, 42, a lieutenant colonel in the N.C. Air National Guard, died when the plane crashed about 10 p.m. (Eastern time) in southwest South Dakota, according to Mikeal’s mother-in-law, Gracie Partridge.

Rescuers took three survivors to a hospital in Rapid City, S.D., according to authorities in South Dakota. The C-130 typically carries a crew of six.
