Post here until your hearts content on the Second Mile.

I'll start by bringing over one of my posts from another thread.

On page 57 of the Freeh report there is a letter from Paterno to Sandusky informing him that he would not be the next head coach BECAUSE of his association the Second Mile.

On page 58, Sandusky responds with a letter requesting the following as part of his retirement:

One of the documents provided from Paterno's file is a letter signed by Sandusky, dated May 28, 1999. In the letter Sandusky acknowledged that he would not be the next Penn State football head coach, and outlined options for his future. Sandusky wanted an on-going relationship between the Second Mile and Penn State, as well as continuing "visibility" at Penn State. Sandusky also wanted "active involvement in developing outreach program featuring Penn State Athletes" and sought "ways for (him) to continue to work with young people through Penn State."

In the next paragraph Sandusky requested to start a middle school youth camp. Paterno noted that "Volunteer Position Director -- Postive Action for Youth."

So there's really no evidence for what you're suggesting. Paterno did not appear to be concerned with the Second Mile. It was merely a distraction to someone who wanted the all-important job of head football coach at Penn State University.

Sandusky requested the association with Penn State football and the Second Mile because he knew the Second Mile was nothing without that assocation. Or to put it another way: his ability to seduce and groom young boys without the lure of Penn State football would be greatly diminished. And he was right. After he was no longer allowed to bring children on campus, after 2001, the rate of his crimes slowed considerably (based on the crimes he was convicted of. There may have been more we aren't aware of).

All that said, I do hope the Second Mile is thoroughly investigated. If anyone in that organization was aware of and covered up Sandusky's crimes, they need to go to prison.

Here's part of the statement released by the organization after Sandusky was indicted:

"The most recent reports we’ve read this past weekend state that Mr. Sandusky met the alleged victims through The Second Mile. To our knowledge, all the alleged incidents occurred outside of our programs and events.

Does anyone know if this is still a true statement?

I do not know. I would be surprised if that were true. sounds highly unlikely to me.

Looks like The Second Mile is just as complicit as Penn State. I wonder if the public school systems that allowed Sandusky access are just as complicit as well.

Some background articles.Looks like there will be no investigation of Second Mile unless people suing them are able to dig. http://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf/2012/07/analysis_freeh_report_sheds_ne.html
In a summary article July 14, 2012, Sara Ganim says:
Second Mile misconceptions

There’s a false belief that more information may still come from The Second Mile’s internal investigation.
It won’t.

Essentially, what Lynne Abraham’s firm found, they used to recommend the children’s charity dissolve and transfer assets to Texas-based charity Arrow Ministries.

No internal report was completed and no public reflection about whether policies were violated will be released publicly. When pressed on the issue, CEO David Woodle said only that the internal report’s decision to continue programs elsewhere was a positive reflection on the charity.

Who is Lynne Abraham?

http://espn.go.com/college-football...y-lions-scandal-president-second-mile-resigns
An ESPN report November 15, 2011, announces the resignation of CEO Raykovitz. It also announces that Courtney resigned the week before and Abraham is in as SM general counsel. The report says:
The Second Mile also announced a new general counsel on Monday. Lynne Abraham is replacing Wendell Courtney, who resigned last week.
Abraham served as the top prosecutor in Philadelphia for nearly two decades, during which she was known for her no-nonsense approach. The city's first female district attorney, she earned the lasting nickname "one tough cookie" from former Mayor Frank Rizzo. She decided not to run again in 2009 and became a partner at the Philadelphia office of the Archer & Greiner law firm in early 2010.
The Second Mile board also said that it would conduct an internal investigation to assess policies and make recommendations regarding future operations. They hope to have those findings by the end of December.

So Abrahams hired her own firm to investigate.

The Patriot News Second ile Exec Raised Concern November 15, 2011

In response, the charity’s board of directors — the ones sticking with the organization — hired former Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne Abraham to conduct an internal investigation.
Abraham will be in charge of finding out how much employees knew and how much was shared about the sexual assaults that have been alleged in a 23-page grand jury presentment, interim CEO David Woodle said….
When asked if he had ever heard allegations against Sandusky before 2008, Woodle, 56, said the full history will be detailed in Abraham’s investigation….
While The Second Mile will be “transparent” with what it learns and the future of the charity, Woodle said he thought it is unlikely the charity will release a report of Abraham’s findings.

Second Miles’ websiteHome page isa June 25, 2012 statement announcing its plans to dispose of assets, transfer programs and dissolve, saying:
Under this proposal, approximately $2 million in current cash assets will be transferred to Houston-based Arrow to fund programs in Pennsylvania for about one and half to two years, Woodle said. Additionally, an on-going program Endowment and some program related non-cash assets will be transferred. On May 25, attorneys for The Second Mile submitted a petition in the Court of Common Pleas of Centre County, Orphans' Court Division, outlining the proposed transfer of programs and dissolution of The Second Mile. Court approval could take several months.
After this transfer of assets and programs, The Second Mile will continue as a legal entity and will continue to cooperate fully with any investigations. In addition, The Second Mile is now in the process of selling property. After that sale is completed, The Second Mile will prepare a Petition to the Court proposing a final disposition of the remaining assets, Woodle said.

WENDY J. MURPHY: What did Second Mile know and when did it know it?
Nov 17, 2011 http://www.patriotledger.com/mobile...cond-Mile-know-and-when-did-it-know-it?zc_p=0

Second Mile also knew about Sandusky’s 2002 alleged anal rape of a child on Penn State's campus because the Grand Jury report states that Athletic Director Tim Curley told the chief executive of Second Mile, Jack Raykovitz, about the incident. Raykovitz, who headed up Second Mile for 28 years until his resignation last week, said he was aware but unconcerned because Penn State had investigated the matter and found "no corroboration" for the allegation.
Aside from the fact that "corroboration" of a child abuse allegation is never required as a matter of law, and that the word of a child, or, as was the case in the 2002 incident, the word of eyewitness Mike McQueary, is always sufficient to sustain a charge, it is extraordinary and offensive in the extreme that Second Mile would apply a corroboration requirement to its internal policies as a shield to inhibit their effective response to a report of extremely serious child sexual abuse.

Any organization that purports to be dedicated to helping children at risk would never require corroboration as a prerequisite to taking action to protect children from harm given that child sex abuse rarely produces corroboration because of its secretive nature and because of how easy it is to manipulate a child into compliance and secrecy.

Some of the comments underneath that article beggar belief. Its no wonder these young men were afraid to come forward for years.

Second Mile escaping invetigation?
http://www.altoonamirror.com/page/content.detail/id/563116/Second-Mile-needs-action.html?nav=742
The State College-based charity was financially crippled by the child sex-abuse scandal involving its founder and onetime public face. After a six-month internal review, The Second Mile concluded in May that it could not continue, and asked a court for permission to transfer programs and millions of dollars in assets to Houston-based Arrow Child & Family Ministries Inc.

But the plan has stalled amid procedural delays and opposition from lawyers for Sandusky's victims. A new judge from out of the area was assigned to the case last week....

The charity hired former Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne Abraham to conduct an internal investigation. It ended in May without having produced a report.

Woodle said Friday that Abraham's review was never meant to uncover potential wrongdoing by Second Mile officials - but to help the charity determine whether it could save itself. He pointed to a Nov. 14 statement on The Second Mile's website that said Abraham's law firm would "conduct an internal investigation to assess our internal policies, procedures and processes; and make recommendations regarding the organization's future operations."

Yet Abraham herself, speaking to reporters that same day, hinted the review would be far more investigatory in nature. "We need to find out how deep this went, who knew about it, when did they find out about it and what was done or not done," she told a news conference.

And a week later, The Second Mile released a statement that said the charity was "doing everything in our power to investigate and understand what happened."

Woodle acknowledged the confusion but said Friday, "We don't have $7 million to do a Freeh report, to be honest with you. We're not trying to hide something. This thing was always about, what's the future?"

Senior Judge William Morgan will rule on The Second Mile's petition to transfer nearly $2 million in assets to a Houston-based charity, then cease to exist...

On June 26, attorneys representing Victims 3, 5 and 7 filed documents in Centre County to block The Second Mile's asset transfer.

A fourth man, identified in court documents as 'John Doe' is also filing to block the transfer. 'John Doe' is a Philadelphia man who, while not a part of the original grand jury presentment, has filed a civil suit in Philadelphia against Sandusky, according to court documents. At least three civil suits have been filed against the university.

According to court documents, transferring $2 million would constitute 40 percent of The Second Mile's holdings and victims' attorneys want The Second Mile prioritize paying off the liabilities incurred from the Sandusky trial, which would be hampered by a transfer of funds.

Some interesting people and businesses are mentioned in the Second Mile's 2010 Annual Report. (I wonder why I can't find the 2011 report anywhere!)

http://www.thesecondmile.org/pdf/AnnualReport2010.pdf

There is quite a bit of irony in the title and opening line:

"A Year Like No Other -
In this column last year, we wrote that 'we anticipate that 2010 will continue to be challenging' and, indeed, it was - challenging like never before in our history." ... I wonder what they would say about 2011??? Maybe: "If we thought 2009 was a year like no other...and if we thought 2010 would continue to be challenging - the year 2011 was from another galaxy altogether."

Of particular interest: State Farm, a donor to the Second Mile, just dropped its sponsorship of Penn State because of the scandal... Shaner Hotel Group, which manages Toftrees, where Sandusky enjoyed bringing some of his victims...

Just posting the para. about the 2nd Mile in article:

Also in March of this year, U.S. Postal inspectors were tasked to investigate The Second Mile charity, which was founded by Sandusky. That investigation is on hold, awaiting for documents to be released by the State Attorney.

The Second Mile should be disbanded; if there is any culpability on the part of any of it's leadership then they should be tried and, if found guilty, sentenced. IMHO

Good article by Ganim. This isn't over by a longshot, imo.
