TORONTO - A severed head has been found near where a human foot was located Wednesday in the Credit River just west of Toronto, police say.

Police said Thursday the body parts belong to a woman and foul play is suspected.

Hikers at Hewick Meadows Park in Mississauga, Ont., found a right human foot floating in the river around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

“We’ve recovered what we know now as a human foot and what we’re releasing to the public is this human foot had yellow nail polish,” acting Insp. Randy Cowan told media at the mouth of the park earlier Thursday

Peel Regional Police Acting Insp. Randy Cowan says the size of the body parts do not suggest they are from a child.

He said police don't know if the body parts were placed there or washed from somewhere else in the river.

Officers are also canvassing the park and homes in the area to see if anyone saw anything suspicious in the past few days.

The foot is now at the Centre for Forensic Sciences.

Police suspect the foot has been in the water for at least a couple of weeks

"We're looking for anybody that has seen anything suspicious within the last couple of weeks," Cowan said.

"We're also looking for people to be vigilant in the area if they're out walking and they happen to find something that causes them concern to give us a call."

Officers are sifting through missing person's reports, in case any have a link to the body parts, Cowan said.

"Typically in the region there are always a number of outstanding missing people," he said. "The majority of those return safely...We are going through those reports right now, reaching out to family members."

Investigators believe the body parts were severed in the last few weeks. The force's homicide and missing persons department are on the case, Cowan said.

Finding severed body parts is becoming an all too common occurence lately. Yikes. You would think if all the body parts were disposed of in the river, they would've found more than just a foot and head by now. I'm leaning toward the parts entering the river from Lake Ontario. A small river like Port Credit seems an odd place for disposal to me (assuming of course, the perp didn't want the parts to be found).

Somewhat o/t, but this is an interesting cold-case story that was finally solved due to an iud's polished nails.

HOUSTON (AP) — The woman's body was found floating in the muddy Brazos River in 1975, her features unrecognizable save for her flawlessly painted scarlet fingernails and flowing yellow hair.

But after 37 years, the 22-year-old mother has been identified by Harris County forensics experts as Gloria Faye Stringer

There is a Facebook group dedicated to finding Mila Johnson, but none of the people there seem to be able to confirm whether or not she had been wearing yellow toenail polish at the time of her disappearance.

Severed head, foot discovered near Credit River west of Toronto

A day after a severed foot was found in a Mississauga, Ontario park, police have now confirmed the grisly discovery of a human head in the Credit River, about 1 km from the initial discovery at Hewick Meadows Park.

Peel Regional Police investigators found the head late Thursday morning said acting Insp. Randy Cowan at a news conference.

Cowan said he couldn't specify exactly where the head was found "because we're still there."

He could not confirm if the foot and head belonged to the same person.

The head does not appear to be that of a child based on a preliminary examination, he said.

The Credit River is actually very large. The Credit River is a river in southern Ontario which flows from headwaters above the Niagara Escarpment to empty into Lake Ontario at Port Credit, Mississauga. It drains an area of approximately 1,000 km². The total length of the river and its tributary streams is over 1,500 km.

According to the report both speciman's were found in the Hewick Meadows Park which is South of Eglinton Ave. West / Bordering Mississauga Road to the West. So, it wasn't near the mouth of the Credit River at Lake Ontario. It was north in that park. Please see the attachment.

I read earlier that the foot had yellow toe-nail polish so that should be helpful in IDing along with the head (I hope).

The news (Citynews) just reported that the remains are only a few weeks old at the most.

Uh oh, there's a missing 16 year old girl from Brampton and she used to live with Margarita Shumakova who was murdered last summer.

Detectives met the family on Thursday to ask whether the girl had any scars or was wearing yellow nail polish before she went missing.

The toenails on a foot discovered Wednesday in a Mississauga park had bright yellow nail polish, police said.

Johnson’s older sister owned two bottles of yellow nail polish but the family isn’t sure the girl was wearing any, her mother said. The detective took the bottles and said they were asking other families similar questions.

Police usually don’t notify families of missing persons to notify them when a body is found, so they don’t worry them for no reason, Peel police Sgt. Peter Brandwood said
