Summerville man charged with homicide

PUNXSUTAWNEY - A Summerville man was arraigned on charges of criminal homicide after a fight with his wife ended in her death on her birthday.
District Judge Douglas Chambers arraigned Michael A. Wonderling, 32, Summerville, Monday on charges of criminal homicide, aggravated assault, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person stemming from an incident that occurred Sunday night.
Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police said Wanda R. Wonderling - who, according to a criminal complaint, turned 37 the day of the incident - of Summerville, died of a single gunshot wound at 8:40 p.m. Sunday at the Wonderling Road residence she shared with Michael Wonderling.
According to an affidavit of probable cause, police responded to a domestic incident at the couple's residence, where they were arguing in a bedroom.
During an interview with police, Michael Wonderling said he and his wife had "a terrible fight," the affidavit said. He said his wife took a .22 caliber rifle - which she had given to him as a gift - from a cabinet in the bedroom and eventually laid it on the bed.
The affidavit said Michael Wonderling then took a shotgun, which she had also given him as a gift, and threw it at a mirror, shattering the mirror.
Wanda Wonderling then grabbed the .22 from the bed and swung it at the mirror, the affidavit said. Michael Wonderling then grabbed the gun and caught it, the affidavit said.
Michael Wonderling admitted pulling the trigger "for an unknown reason," the affidavit said, and the round struck Wanda Wonderling in the right eye.
The round entered the skull region, causing a mortal wound, the affidavit said.
Michael Wonderling told police that at the time he fired the gun, his wife was not in contact with the weapon, the affidavit said.
Michael Wonderling was remanded to the Jefferson County jail without bail, because the criminal homicide charge means the case is capital.
Chambers scheduled his preliminary hearing for 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18.
