REMEMBER: We don't sleuth or disparage or insinuate about family UNLESS LE or MSM give us reason to. If that happens, the mods will let you know.

ALSO - we don't post random pics of people on facebook. We DO NOT involve the innocent in these horrific cases.

Sometimes you might stumble across something that you think is pertinent, but is against TOS to post. If that happens, the best course of action is to make a note of it and keep it UNDER YOUR HAT. Don't post here. Wait to see if the parametersof the case change so that the info does become important. If in doubt, contact a Mod for help.

Social Networks

Regarding Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and other social networking or blog websites: Links may be used to direct posters to view something on a social networking page. But postings on social networking sites are not considered fact; they are rumor. Copying and pasting, or taking screen caps, directly from these pages is not allowed. Paraphrasing is okay. (Exception: If the Twitter or Facebook post belongs to a verified news station, it may be copied. But a link should still be provided.)

Also, social networking pages may only be linked if they are directly related to a case, i.e. the victim or suspect. We don't want to post to someone's mother, brother, employer, milkman, or postal carrier just because they know the main player. We also NEVER link to minor's pages (unless they are the victim). And be sure that the page actually belongs to the person being discussed. Do not link to someone if you are not 100% sure it is the correct person. And if a social networking is set to private and you get in the back way, you may not post what you find. Private means private!

I wonder if they've been scouring the landfill of that neighborhood's trash, to find identical garbage bags of recent trash to see if there's any made from the same machine containing identifiable items such as prescription bottles, letter envelopes, etc.

Hoping another news source will pick up on what Fox printed and try to determine how much of it is true, i.e. receipts found, DNA matching the assault with Jessica's murder, etc. Or that LE will make a statement. That was a lot of info for Fox to drop last night; it had to come from someplace, even if the part about the "hair" was probably exaggerated.

A slightly out-of-place "JMO" regarding the reliability of the print media (it came up a fair bit overnight)---

I worked in a major metropolitan newspaper for seven years, including a couple of years in the fact check/research library. Not only was there a full-time staff of many degree'd research librarians who were constantly pulling data from both hard-copy and digital sources (ones you have to pay for, not google) to assist the reporters/writers, the emphasis at that particular paper on checking and checking and re-checking every verifiable fact was phenomenal. When a correction had to be run, it was like a mark of shame.

Now, that was 10+ years ago and the print media has of course been massively impacted by the internet. But that particular workplace of mine had the highest level of integrity and work ethic of anywhere I've ever worked. ESPECIALLY when a child had been harmed. I assume that today's large newspapers, especially those that still have a print edition, still function somewhat on that model. It's not just one person ticking away at a computer, blog-style, and writing whatever sounds good at the moment--there is a team of editors and researchers behind a big story like Sunday's Denver Post writeup.

Because of my experience, I do give more credence to large news organizations with a print edition than I do bloggers/facebook/cable and local news *TV shows* (who just care about ratings) etc, but they all have quite a challenge with this case--not a lot of hard fact to go on, very few press conferences by LE, and a whole lot of rumor and speculation.

I would like to read more about this ... would you happen to have a link?

Never mind ..."Investigator Trevor Materasso of the Westminster Police Department said that "60 percent" of what Fox 31 reported Sunday night was "erroneous and bad information."

Read The Denver Post's Terms of Use of its content: http://www.denverpost.com/termsofuse

From the same article:

"Jessica was abducted after she left home walking to school Oct. 5. Her remains were found in garbage bags 11 miles away in an open field in Arvada's Pattridge Park five days after her disappearance. "

This article was posted late last night.

If the part of the KDVR story about the receipts is true, I am curious about a couple of things. Typically, the cashiers will ask if you have a "King Soopers" card which is basically a discount card. To register for such a card, you provide an address, phone number, etc. Of course you can always tell them no and not receive credit or discounts on your purchase. I also wonder how he paid. I suppose he is smart enough to have paid in cash.

Having to constantly give out my personal info these days annoys me enough that I usually lie on loyalty-program cards.

If the receipts do belong to the killer, I think it reflects that he is not too smart/organized anyway. (Also, leaving DNA with two victims, not so smart.) And if he bought these bags sometime prior to Jessica's abduction, along with other groceries, he may not have known at the time what use he would make of them, and indeed used a discount card if he had one.

I'm not convinced that there's any point in discussing the contents of the Fox News rumor/gossip article that police have said is 60% incorrect.

So 60% of that article is incorrect ... it almost seems like the source for the article is online discussion boards.

Perhaps, although the bit about the receipts is new...had not seen that anyplace else.

Being a single man myself, I can't remember the last time I spent over $25 at a supermarket. My usual grocery shopping bill is probably in a range of $5-$15. Surely he has several other people living with him to drop $60 at once like that at a grocery store.

Edit: The post is based only from personal obervation and is not meant to disparage the single male demographic.

It could have been a roommate or relative that purchased the groceries (which included the pastic bags that day.) It also, could have been he just grabbed bags out of a drawer ...not looking inside or checking to see if something (like a receipt) had stuck to the bunched up bags. MOO

I think the Denver Post article was done in a professional manner. And I do think that larger papers with print editions are more reliable and more professional in general. Certainly better than the local tv news, where much of the time people just basically say whatever.

But the entire newspaper industry has been hit hard financially, and I am sure most papers can no longer afford a team of fact-checkers, and that the reporters and writers are more overloaded and cannot devote the same amount of time as in previous years. Also, because newspaper writing is seen as a dying profession, there are likely to be a lot fewer top quality young writers coming in.
