Social Networks

Regarding Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and other social networking or blog websites: Links may be used to direct posters to view something on a social networking page. But postings on social networking sites are not considered fact; they are rumor. Copying and pasting, or taking screen caps, directly from these pages is not allowed. Paraphrasing is okay. (Exception: If the Twitter or Facebook post belongs to a verified news station, it may be copied. But a link should still be provided.)

Also, social networking pages may only be linked if they are directly related to a case, i.e. the victim or suspect. We don't want to post to someone's mother, brother, employer, milkman, or postal carrier just because they know the main player. We also NEVER link to minor's pages (unless they are the victim). And be sure that the page actually belongs to the person being discussed. Do not link to someone if you are not 100% sure it is the correct person. And if a social networking is set to private and you get in the back way, you may not post what you find. Private means private!

We can also say that there were receipts collected during the investigation. We can say that they were NOT found at Patridge Park and are not related to the Jessica Ridgeway investigation. Investigators were at King Soopers, however they were following up on several other tips.

http://www.9news.com/news/local/article/295798/346/Investigators-gather-500-DNA-samples

Investigators selected people for DNA samples based on a variety of factors, 9Wants to Know learned and Materasso confirmed.

Investigators asked for DNA from the following groups:

People who members of the public said should be considered suspects in Ridgeway's killing.
People identified through information gathered when police canvassed neighborhoods near her house and where her backpack was discovered.
People whose cellphones were used in areas near the crime scene.
People who matched the description of a man who tried to grab a woman as she was running around Ketner Lake in Westminster.

I'm afraid the perp may be getting rather cocky and seeing it now as a game between him and LE, since they have confirmed the link between the May incident and Jessica - and are vowing to keep the public safe. The perp may be one who flees to another state, or one who loves this game of cat-and-mouse.

If I lived in the area, I would be not let my children go anywhere without a trusted adult present. And would be careful myself.

Has anyone else noticed the Google Maps street view image of a black truck parked across the street and down a little from Jessica's house? Oddly, there appears to be a woman jogging in the background. You can see her on the sidewalk between the truck and the homes on the west side of the street.

I don't ever remember DNA being taken for this many people before (500). Does anyone know if this has been done previously?

(I mistyped "previously" at first, and one of the autocorrect suggestions I was given was "perviously"! I didn't even know that was a word! Although I suppose it really has to do with permeability, not being a perv.)

the BTK case was the first one that came to my mind... (1300 swabs were destroyed after he was arrested... they used this same technique in that investigation)
http://www.monnat.com/2006/05/31/1300-swabs-from-btk-case-burned/

GMA just showed parts of this case. I can't find it online yet. Basically talking about the link between the 2 cases.

I guess I would be presumed as guilty for not complying to DNA swab.

I'm guessing they have dna from the crime and the perp isn't in the system. LE is going all the way to get this creep.

A google search turned up many cases where this was done. I didn't know either. I found this very interesting. I'm sure it's already been discussed here, but I missed it. In case others missed it to:

"In contrast to traditional methods, familial searching methods extend beyond the individual DNA profiles to identify individuals whose relatives could have left key crime scene evidence. There are several methods available, some focusing on male relatives. For example Y chromosome profiles are shared amongst all male relatives related to one another through the father’s bloodline. Therefore a volunteer’s DNA might not match the crime scene evidence, but it could be close enough to implicate a relative - like a son, a brother or nephew.

Familial searching magnifies the power of law enforcement. A DNA dragnet of a few hundred Cape Cod males could effectively include, indirectly, several hundred more of their biological relatives. So even if no direct DNA matches are found to the volunteers, all is not lost. In fact, searching for close matches between crime scene evidence and common Y chromosome markers would be far more effective than hoping for a complete direct DNA match using traditional forensic profiling methods. Thus, paradoxically, with familial searching methods, certain indirect DNA matches could provide useful clues about possible relatives who would potentially be much more viable as suspects than the volunteers themselves."

I don't have names or links, but yes it's been done. There was a case in a coastal town in the Northeast, who's entire male population was DNA'd. I believe there was a serial killer in Louisiana where LE took hundreds of samples as well.

This is just using your post to bounce off of....Someone else was posting in the other thread about familial DNA and the Grim Sleeper. I believe this is also used in known suspected perps. They go directly to family members and get DNA from them. BTK's daughter did this for LE.

I guess I would be presumed as guilty for not complying to DNA swab.

I would comply in this case. LE is supposed to destroy the DNA afterwards. I certainly understand your point of view. I would never want a national data base of everyones DNA. Too easy for some Tom Foolery to go on. Not to mention the civil rights violations involved. But I am glad they are taking every step they can to get the murderer.

There was a case-I cannot for the life of me remember the name of the victim, but IIRC she was a young mother, who was stabbed to death in her home in front of her infant daughter. The baby was left alone in the home for hours, maybe even days, with her dead mother. LE ended up taking DNA from every single male in the town where the murder occurred. I can't remember if they ended up finding a match, but I believe they did.

ETA-SusyQ mentioned this case too, upthread...It was indeed a coastal town. I'm going crazy trying to find it now. It was one I followed pretty closely.

They used in the Derrick Todd Lee serial murder case in Louisiana also.

Do we have any locals who can tell me whether there are any yards without complete fencing on the west side of the road? It might be seen as a short cut for Jessica to cut through a yard to that sidewalk behind the houses. But you can't really tell from the map images whether there might a segment of fence that has been taken down. It would have been easy for someone to grab her as she walked through someone's back yard.
