Only a couple of cars sat in the parking lot outside the Dollar General. Both sisters, who asked not to be named out of concern for their safety, regularly shop there. As they started to go into the store a few minutes after 8 p.m., a woman brushed past.

“Something really bad has happened in there,” the woman said.

For a moment, the two sisters thought they might be able to help someone inside. But they stopped at the inner door when they saw a man’s feet in dark shoes, pointing toward the ceiling. Then they saw the whole body of the man lying on the floor, near a checkout counter at the front of the store. He was on his back. They saw blood.

“He was very beloved at our store,” store manager Ty Flanagan said. “That’s not patronizing. That’s the truth.”

When other Dollar General stores in Wichita needed some help to close or fill in for a few hours, he would be there, Flanagan said.

Workers from the other stores have called Flanagan the last few days to express their sorrow. When Flanagan reopened his store Sunday, he said, customers came up to him and said, “Please tell me it wasn’t Zach. He really cared for us.”

“Everyone in our store was blessed by him,” Flanagan added.

Marquis Marshall spoke just five words in court before he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the shooting deaths of two people inside a Wichita Dollar General store last November...

A Sedgwick County jury deliberated less than 1 1/2 hours on Oct. 2 before convicting Marshall of capital murder. His defense lawyer presented no evidence at the trial, and a motive for the shootings was never disclosed.
