DURHAM, N.C. -- Durham investigators have charged a Virginia man in a triple homicide that had gone unsolved for nearly three decades.

Ronnie Lindbergh Manning, 54, of Virginia Beach, Va., was arrested at his house Tuesday night and charged with three counts of murder in the deaths of Aubrey L. Goss, 63; Walter Dean, 53; and William Wheeler, 37.

They were shot to death inside a garage on Oct. 7, 1976 at a house known for gambling and drinking......

On the morning of the slayings, Goss, 63, apparently opened the door to someone who killed him and the other two men. Goss' brother found him lying face down near the steel door.

He had been shot eight times in the head, chest and stomach and stabbed three times in the back. The two other victims were killed by blows to the head, probably with a hatchet, authorities said.....

Slow DNA results holding up case

Durham's oldest pending criminal case hit another snag Wednesday.

Defense attorneys were denied a chance to demand speedy DNA results on whether blood from a knife came from three victims who were stabbed, shot and bludgeoned to death in a Driver Avenue garage 30 years ago.

Representing triple homicide suspect Gary Ernest "Whitey" Bennett, the attorneys had expected to voice the demand to Superior Court Judge Ron Stephens.

But Stephens declined to hear their arguments because he was employed by the District Attorney's Office at the time of the 1976 murders and was familiar with an investigation that took place then.

As a result, lawyers Tom Loflin and Karen Bethea-Shields will make their plea next week to another judge, Abraham Jones.

Why is it that when a custodial parent fails to provide for a child it is called neglect and is a criminal matter. But when a non custodial parent fails to provide it is called failure to support and is a civil matter?

That is so gruesome. I hope this guy gets convicted if he is proven to be the killer.

This should be pulled out of resolved. It is still unsolved.

I actually realized today that I knew this family. This murder occurred 37 years ago today.
