Shooter opens fire on multiple people at Webster, N.Y., house fire, injuring at least one firefighter (NY Daily News)

Firefighter shot at scene of blaze in western NY (AP)

Firefighters shot while battling New York blaze (CNN)
(CNN) -- At least two firefighters were shot when they arrived to battle a blaze at a house in upstate New York on Monday, officials said.

Authorities believe someone shot at the firefighters shortly after they exited their vehicles, said Rob Boutillier, fire marshal in the town of Webster, New York.

The gunfire stopped firefighters from battling the blaze and forced police SWAT teams to evacuate homes in the area.

Firefighters arrived at the scene before 6 a.m., Boutillier said. By 9 a.m., flames had engulfed three houses and a vehicle, he said.

At least two Webster firefighters are dead, and three houses on Lake Road continue to burn after a gunman open fired on firefighters who responded to an early morning fire.

There are no active shooters at the scene, according to a news conference held by Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn.

The fire broke out at 5:45 a.m. at 191 Lake Road on the Irondequoit Bay side of the street.

What a strange story. Why shoot unless you have something to hide.
I think Steely Dan lives in that area. Maybe he will come by and tell us what is being said from his local tv stations.
 
I hope they get whoever did this before he kills more. Another tragedy to deal with. More sad people who lost loved ones.

Authorities are on the scene evacuating residents. Residents are being evacuated from the Webster side of the bay to the Irondequoit side. They are being searched by New York state police and other authorities before being taken to a Regional Transit Service bus.

There is no information whether the homes that are on fire were occupied.

Boutillier advised that residents who feel safe in their homes could stay, but advised them to stay away from windows and doors. A SWAT team is also on the scene escorting residents to RTS buses that are taking them out of the neighborhood.

Really? What the heck is wrong with people? It infuriates and saddens me to know two families will be mourning their loss rather than getting excited about opening gifts in the morning.

I hope they catch these SOBs.
 
These men went out to save lives-instead they lost theirs. How could anyone do this, on Christmas Eve morn? This sounds like a trap laid for the firefighters...

WEBSTER, N.Y. (AP) - Four volunteer firefighters responding to an intense pre-dawn house fire were shot Monday morning, two fatally, leading to a shootout between a suspect and police in suburban Rochester, N.Y., police said.

"One or more shooters" fired at the firefighters after they arrived shortly after 5:30 a.m. at the blaze near the Lake Ontario shore, just east of Rochester, Town of Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering said.

wfgodot has a better handle on this than I do. I'm not getting much here at all.

I'm following along with the news coverage so here's some new stuff.

191 Lake Road is in the name of William Spengler who spent 17 years in prison. They don't know if he has anything to do with this. It sounds like he might be P.O.'d. It belonged to his grandmother, is in his name, but also a woman who's name I couldn't understand when the newscaster said it., but was passed over to a third party in 1994. If he was in prison for 17 years then it was 1995 when he went in. They haven't been able to get into any of the houses to see if anyone is in any of the houses dead or alive.

Why he shot at the firefighters I don't know. Nobody can figure this out. It seems like it was a trap.

They will be giving a news conference in a few minutes.

I live about 20 miles south of Webster. I can get there in almost a straight line.
 
Joseph Hofsetter, Theodore Scardino the wounded firefighters. John Ritter (sp?) also hit by shrapnel in his car.

Wounded firefighters in guarded condition; expected to recover but will likely need "long months" of recovery and possible rehabilitative therapy.
 
Two firefighters are in the ICU, but both are talking and breathing on their own. There is some burning, but the major injuries came from the bullet.
