"Brents, 35, is suspected in sexual assaults on five women and girls earlier this month in one Denver neighborhood....................................................

Those attacks came nearly three months after police in Aurora let him go on Nov. 23 after questioning him about claims that he inappropriately touched a former girlfriend's 8-year-old son.............................................................

Aurora police said he told officers the boy was telling the truth, but no arrest warrant was issued until Jan. 26. "..........................................................

Brents had been released from prison in July after being sent to a state hospital for about three years and then to prison for 14 years for raping a young boy and a girl.............................................................................

Karen Steinhauser, who prosecuted Brents for two rapes in 1988, said she put together a deal in 1988 in which Brents pleaded innocent by reason of insanity to one of the rapes so he could get treatment...............................

"The whole intention was to get him off the street for a very lengthy period of time. And during that period of time, the intention was also to get him help," said Steinhauser, now a professor at the University of Denver Law School"

A woman brutally beaten, allegedly by serial rape suspect Brent J. Brents, is now at a hospital that specializes in traumatic brain injury rehabilitation.

Hospital spokesman Kenny Hosack said the Feb.18 attack left Engle with multiple brain contusions and skull fractures.

DENVER — A man accused of raping or beating 10 people in the Denver area, including two 11-year-old girls and their grandmother, confessed Wednesday before a judge who handed him a prison term of more than 1,300 years.

Brent J. Brents (search), 36, took responsibility for attacks — including sexual assaults of seven women and the two girls — that occurred between October 2004 and Feb. 18.

District Judge Robert Hyatt, who told Brents he caused an "epidemic of fear to the community," ordered the maximum sentence on each of 68 counts, which included sexual assault, attempted murder, kidnapping and burglary.

District attorney's spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough said the total sentence was 1,319 years, and that Brents could never reach parole eligibility.

Brents was arrested in February in Glenwood Springs (search), about 150 miles west of Denver, driving a stolen car that belonged to one of the victims. Police used DNA to link Brents to several crimes.

He previously served time in prison and a state hospital for raping a young boy and a girl.

Brents had been arrested but released by police in the Denver suburb of Aurora last fall despite allegedly confessing to inappropriately touching an 8-year-old boy. Five of the Denver rapes occurred in February, and the Aurora police chief resigned in March.

Brents still faces eight felony counts including sexual assault, kidnapping and sexual assault on a child in Arapahoe County, which encompasses Aurora. He is to appear before a judge Friday to enter a plea, a prosecutor's spokesman said.

A confessed serial rapist already sentenced to more than 1,300 years in prison pleaded guilty Friday to more sex-related charges and was sentenced to an additional 190 years.

Brent J. Brents was accused of attempting to rape a woman and of fondling an 8-year-old boy in this east Denver suburb. He pleaded guilty in Arapaho County District Court to six counts, including sexual assault and sexual assault on a child.

On Wednesday, Brents, 36, pleaded guilty in Denver District Court to raping nine women and children and beating a 10th person. His rape victims included a 67-year-old woman and her two 11-year-old grandchildren.

The Denver judge sentenced to the maximum prison term on each count for a total of 1,319 years. Brents' combined sentence is now 1,509 years.
