A Los Angeles elementary school teacher accused of sexually abusing 20 students and one adult was arrested Wednesday, police said.

Eight counts of continual sexual abuse and seven counts of lewd acts upon a child have been filed against Robert Pimental for abuse that took place at George De La Torre Jr. Elementary in the Wilmington area, police said.

............While it took nearly a year to bring charges against Pimentel, the reaction by the school district shows how reforms put in place last year have reshaped policies over dealing with sexual abuse by teachers.

Those policies were put in place after the February 2012 arrest of Miramonte Elementary School third grade teacher Mark Berndt, who is accused of blindfolding pupils and feeding them his semen in a tasting game. The district has since mandated that parents be notified within 72 hours of a report of a suspected abuser, and that each case be reviewed by several human resources staffers to ensure it is reported to the Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

District officials have also vowed to investigate molestation claims and move quickly to remove suspected teachers from classrooms while investigations are ongoing..........more at link.....

He said the teacher’s file “contained notations of suspected misconduct along the lines for what he was later charged with, which was inappropriate touching of a student.”

District officials prepared a “notice of termination” for Pimentel and the principal, according to Deasy.

They had planned to present it to the Board of Education in April 2012, but both retired before the board meeting. Because they retired before the district took action, they will get their full pensions.

“People who commit acts like this should be terminated, and that termination should be made easy,” Deasy said on Thursday morning.

“We should not have cumbersome state laws around this, and you should be able to fire someone even if they choose to retire.

Thanks for linking the article Reader, and I am glad that school officials acted more appropriately this time.

Included in the link, it said that investigators identified multiple victims including another teacher who stated that she had been touched inappropriately. It is a shame that the teacher's report was not made or was not believed as the accused had two prior complaints in his file about similar things. In sum, the district handled it better, but obviously still has a long way to go.

June 2014:

A former fourth-grade teacher in Wilmington was sentenced to 12 years in state prison Thursday after pleading no contest in a negotiated plea deal to molesting three students and a female relative.

After the sentencing, Pimentel's attorney, Leonard Levine, said his client agreed to the plea deal because he believed it was in his best interest.

"He has consistently denied the truth of the allegations," Levine said. "He felt accepting the offer (would be best)."...

After hearing reports of Pimentel's abuse, school officials failed to report the incidents to law enforcement and brought in "an unlicensed (mediator) to effectively get the parents to shut the hell up. Sexual abuse flourishes when it is kept secret."
