Levitt said the body of what is believed to be a white man may have had only underwear on, and did not have any identification. He said he didn’t have any other description of the body and wasn’t sure if it bore any injuries or how long it may have been in the water.

A 30-year-old San Francisco man found dead in the water off Ocean Beach often swam in the Pacific at night after work, friends said Friday.

Alex Peer's body was spotted in the surf near Judah Street at 7:26 a.m. Thursday. Investigators with the medical examiner's office retrieved the body, and an autopsy will be conducted.

Peer was known to swim at Ocean Beach after he left Dixie Restaurant in the Presidio, where he worked late as an event planner, said Stephanie Wilson, a friend.

U.S. Park Police officers are still investigating how Peer ended up in the water, said Howard Levitt, a spokesman for the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
