Police late Wednesday were questioning the father of a 2-year-old boy found dead in a garbage can on Chicago's Southwest Side hours earlier.
Just after 3 p.m., a man rifling through garbage cans in an alley in Little Village discovered the toddler's battered body in a white plastic bag, according to police and neighbors.
The child, a Hispanic male whose name has not been released, was dressed in a T-shirt and jeans, and a source close to the investigation said he likely died several hours before being discovered.
The boy had apparently suffered some kind of facial trauma and a few of his front teeth appeared to have been knocked out, a source told the Chicago Sun-Times. Though it is officially labeled a death investigation, authorities believe this is likely a homicide case.
The boy's father, who had apparently reported the child missing, was taken to the Harrison Area 4 Headquarters. He and the child live in the vicinity where the body was found in a plastic garbage can, investigators said.
