CNN) -- Two men suspected in the Boston Marathon bombing that killed three people this week terrorized the area overnight. One is dead, but the other is on the loose, police say, and he's armed and dangerous.

In a long night of violence the two suspects killed an MIT police officer, injured a transit officer in a firefight, and threw explosive devices at police during their getaway attempt, authorities said.

Federal sources have told CBS News national security correspondent Bob Orr that officials believe the suspect who is still alive is either wearing an explosive vest, or has explosives with him.

A beloved campus cop was the fourth victim in the Boston bombers’ reign of terror — shot dead before he could even draw his gun.

“He wanted to get to know students — he wanted to understand us. . . . He knew which students he was protecting every day when he came to work,” one student wrote.

Boston on lockdown as details pour in: Suspects told carjack victim they were marathon bombers

The brothers then carjacked a Mercedes SUV, holding the driver captive for a half-hour while they tried to use his cash card to get money from three ATM's, a source said. At the first, they put in the wrong number; at the second, they took out $800 and at the third, they were told they had exceeded the withdrawal limit, the source said.
The man was released unharmed at a gas station in Cambridge, sources said. As they sped toward Watertown, a police chase ensued and the suspects tossed explosive devices out the window, officials said.

Aunt: Boston bombing suspect struggled with Islam
Tamerlan Tsarnaev seemed more American than Chechen and "did not fit into the Muslim life" in Russia's Caucasus, Patimat Suleimanova told The Associated Press. She said when Tsarnaev arrived in January 2012, he wore a winter hat with a little pompom, something no local man would wear, and "we made him take it off."
Authorities will investigate if links come up between bombing suspect and unsolved 2011 slaying
Mess' brother, Dylan, told the AP on Saturday that he and his brother both knew Tsarnaev, but declined to talk about him.
And Charles Paquette, the owner of the Waltham house..., said he met some of Mess' boxer friends but does not know if Tamerlan Tsarnaev was among them.

The relative said Sunday that police have renewed the investigation at the request of victims’ relatives who believe Tamerlan, and perhaps his younger brother, Dzhokhar, played a role in the homicides. Authorities have said the victims all had their throats slit.

But the relative interviewed by the Globe said the murders took place the evening before, on Sept. 11,... The relative said he knew this because he was texting one of the victims about a Sunday night football game...when communication with the victims suddenly stopped at about 8:15 that evening.

“The three of them were definitely killed on Sept. 11,” the relative said. “They all stopped using their cellphones at about eight o’clock that night.”

Special Report: the radicalization of Tamerlan Tsarnaev

MAKHACHKALA, Russia/CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts (Reuters) - In America, he had been a cocky and charismatic heavyweight boxer who wore fancy pointy leather shoes and slick white shirts down to the gym.

In Dagestan, the volatile southern Russian region where he lived for a time as a teen and returned to spend the first half of 2012, he became a quiet young man who spent his days online studying Islam, nursing a growing anger against heretics
"His radical turn could very well have happened here," Dagestani sociologist Zaid Abdulagatov said. "The Islam that we have in Dagestan today is very tough, very politicized, very dark at times."

When the younger brother, Dzhokhar, was forced to go inside the Shell Food Mart to pay, older brother Tamerlan put his gun in the door pocket to fiddle with a navigation device -- letting his guard down briefly after a night on the run. Danny then did what he had been rehearsing in his head.

Reuters) - The parents of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects have retreated to a village in southern Russia to shelter from the spotlight and abandoned plans for now to travel to the United States, the father of the suspects told Reuters on Sunday.

Speaking in the garden of a large house, Anzor Tsarnaev said he believed he would not be allowed to see his surviving son Dzhokhar, who was captured and has been charged in connection with the April 15 bomb blasts that killed three people and wounded 264.

He agreed to the face-to-face meeting on condition that the village's location in the North Caucasus, a string of mainly Muslim provinces in southern Russia, not be disclosed.

"I am not going back to the United States. For now I am here. I am ill," said Tsarnaev

(CNN) -- Less than two weeks after he partied with classmates in a college dorm, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev now lives in drastically different surroundings.
The 19-year-old Boston Marathon bombing suspect is locked inside a 10-by-10-foot cell with a steel door, a slot for food and an observation window, a prison spokesman said Sunday.
Tsarnaev is able to speak and has been interacting with staff at the Federal Medical Center Devens, spokesman John Colautti said.
Medical professionals at the prison medical facility, which currently houses 1,044 inmates, are making regular rounds to check on Tsarnaev, Colautti said, and Tsarnaev has spoken with staff there about managing his health.

The chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee said Sunday that federal authorities are investigating whether the suspects in the Boston marathon bombing received training that helped them carry out the deadly attack.
Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) said during an appearance on Fox News Sunday that it was too soon to dismiss a possible connection between the suspects and foreign terrorists.

"Right out-of-the-box, U.S. officials unanimously are saying there's not foreign connection to this case when in fact the FBI just began its investigation into the case," McCaul said on Fox News Sunday. "They just got the computer. They just sent a U.S. team over to (the) Chechen region, and to Dagestan, to interview witnesses."

ormer CIA officer: ‘Absurd’ to link uncle of Boston suspects, Agency
Posted on April 27, 2013 by Laura Rozen

Retired CIA officer Graham Fuller confirmed to Al-Monitor Saturday that his daughter was previously married to an uncle of the suspects in the Boston Marathon attacks, but called rumors of any links between the uncle and the Agency “absurd.”
Fuller said his former son in law was interesting but homesick, and moved back to Central Asia after the divorce.

“Like all Chechens, Ruslan was very concerned about his native land, but I saw no particular involvement in politics, [although] he did try to contact other Chechens around,” Fuller continued. “He also felt homesick and eventually went back to Central Asia after the divorce. His English was shaky. (We always spoke Russian together

Ruslan Tsarni has said in media interviews that his family was estranged from his brother Aznor’s, over what Ruslan described as the growing religious fanaticism of Aznor’s wife, Zubeidat, and that the families had not spoken for several years. Aznor and Zubeidat’s sons Tamerlan, 26, and Dzhokhar, 19, are accused of carrying out the April 15th Boston Marathon bombings.

(CBS News) BOSTON - Before the Boston bombing, it has been nearly 12 years since the last major terrorist attack on U.S. soil. Among the fallout is the question many Americans are asking once again: 'Just how safe are we?' We spoke to some teens who are asking that question for the first time.

"There were all these people screaming and there were like a lot of loud noises," remembered Hannah Wolfberg.

Clockwise from the left: Hannah Wolfberg, Lily Henderson, Sasha Morris and Stephanie Henderson spoke to CBS News' Dr. Jon LaPook on their feelings about safety following the Boston Marathon bombing attack. / CBS News
She and her best friend Lily Henderson were shopping one block away from where the bombs went off.

"It's hard to describe but it looked like sheer terror," said Hannah.

"Is the environment that we're in today," said Stephanie, "where things like this happen all too often -- is that always going to be the environment we're in? When I have kids in 10-15 years are we going to feel safer, less safe? "

"You can't forget it," said Hannah. "But then you also have to make sure you're OK and not think about it 24-7. You know, focus on normal high school teenage things. I think that's the only way to be OK right now."
