'CAPTURED!!!' Boston police announce Marathon bombing suspect in custody

By Chelsea J. Carter and Michael Pearson, CNN
updated 9:07 PM EDT, Fri April 19, 2013

(CNN) -- The suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings was taken into custody Friday night, bringing to an end a massive manhunt that virtually shut down the Massachusetts capital amid warnings the man was possibly armed with explosives.

Okay, I've rounded up some photos, particularly of site #2, which had the angled 'wrapped' barrier around the postal box--which made me think the blast came from street-side of the barrier. In rounding up photos, I found some I hadn't seen before, and also thought of a couple questions when I was done. Let me know what you think, y'all. (And if this thread closes, mods, could you please move this post to the next one? TIA!)

TWO BLAST SITES:

After looking at these photos, a couple questions came to mind…I’m just wondering:

• Where is the blast mark for site #2? (can’t find this photo or mark on sidewalk)

• Where are the remnants of DT’s backpack (pale gray with blk stripe)? The UK article above showing the box/pkge by the mailbox says that forensics were studying nylon fibers found at ONE of the sites. Wondering why they weren't found at site two as well?

This is a spliced-together before and after of bomb site #2. Does it seem to you that there is a chunk missing in the curb in the "after" photo (just to the right of the officer's foot)?

He wrote of plagues of nightmares, three “zombie apocalypse” dreams in July and two in December, one of which depicted the end of the world. In February, he wrote, “I killed Abe Lincoln during my two hour nap #intensedream.”

But as April began, Mr. Tsarnaev apparently declared that he no longer cared. After Mr. Tsarnaev emerged as a suspect in the bombing, Mr. Lamichhane said, a mutual friend from the University of Massachusetts recounted his last conversation with Mr. Tsarnaev, two weeks before the marathon. Mr. Tsarnaev told their friend, “God is all that matters. It doesn’t matter about school and engineering,” Mr. Lamichhane said. “He said, ‘When it comes to school and being an engineer, you can cheat easily. But when it comes to going to heaven, you can’t cheat.’ ”

Thanks to Elainera for posting this article.

With the above quotes I would think he was depressed and suicidal, and try to help him out via talking and hanging out if I were his friend. Would never guess it was something much worse on his mind!

If he was depressed and suicidal it would make sense that his brother would be able to talk him into a suicide bombing. But it seemed like he wanted to get away with it and do even more damage. He acted regular after the bombings.I just don't get it.
I would also like to find out more about KR's upbringing. Were her parents strict, religious, liberal ? In the beginning it seemed clear cut to me,same old story, girl with low self esteem willing to do anything for her boyfriend, domestic abuse kind of situation. But she seems very strong willed after all, from the reports it seemed she embraced Islam on her own,she seems more like ZT (down to the shoplifting charges),the neighbors reported a woman yelling at someone, that does not sound like an abused wife......

Just want to point out that the fence on the left does not appear to have fallen over, neither towards the street nor the sidewalk. It is still standing.

This fence at bomb one was much more substantial than the barriers at bomb two that had fallen over and twisted

I don't see it that way at all PIM.

Those barriers look about 8 to 10 feet wide. The one that was behind the post box is still there because the post box prevented it from being blown outward into the street, but approx. 4 feet of the left side of that barrier is bent outward and against the left side of the post box.

I see what you're talking about, and I've been back and forth with the scenario in my head--which way and how would that barrier bend from the force of the blast...it's just hard to know definitively.

For all we know, it could be that the affected barriers at site #2 (including the one on top of the people, tilted AWAY from the street) blew sky high and then landed any which way...so how they are situated on the concrete after the blast might not have as much to do with the direction of the blast, after all.

Actually, this fence barrier (bent at right angle) was at site #2 (see photos above).

Lawyers for alleged Boston bomber buddy seek release

Phillipos was at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where all four men had studied, by coincidence on April 18, his lawyers said in the court papers.
"By sheer coincidence and bad luck, he was invited to attend a seminar on campus on April 18," the night the three allegedly went to Tsarnaev's dorm room, according to the documents.
To support their request for bail, the lawyers filed affidavits from friends and relatives of Phillipos who described him as a considerate, thoughtful and friendly young man, the son of a single mother who emigrated to the United States from Ethiopia.

bbm,

The quote I was replying to has a picture of bomb one site and stating that the fence wasn't bent there. I was just stating the total different nature and strength of the different barriers at each site. I did also mention that bomb two was where the fencing was bent.

I watched some of the video footage and agree that the barriers were very different. At the first bomb site, the LE and paramedics struggled to rip down the fencing to get to the victims from the street. It appeared to all be intact until they tore it down, IMO.

This may already have been posted, I'm sometimes reading so fast to keep up I miss things.

On April 19, as the news spread that the Tsarnaev brothers were believed to have committed the marathon bombings and gone on a nightlong crime spree that involved the fatal shooting of a campus police officer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a carjacking and a gunfight with the police in which Tamerlan was killed, a neighbor knocked at the door of their third-floor apartment in Cambridge, where Ms. Russell had apparently just heard the news from a relative. “She was in utter shock,” the neighbor said. “Utter shock.”

Then law enforcement officers arrived and ordered them all out. Their downstairs neighbor Albrect Ammon, 18, said Ms. Russell, who was dressed all in black, tried to borrow a cellphone from another woman, but an officer snatched it away, saying she was the suspect’s wife.

Edith Flynn, professor emeritus at Northeastern University and a terrorism expert, said the U.S. government should arrange a flight on a military cargo plane already headed to the North Caucasus region where Tsarnaev’s parents live.

“Look at the choice. Do you want to use taxpayer dollars to help fix a vandalized cemetery or get rid of the body in the most convenient way that would rid us of the problem for good?” Flynn said.

I do agree with this.

This is one of the more interesting background articles I've read. Certainly more informative than the Time's earlier fluffy piece about DT's Holden Caulfield-ish alienation. While I believe DT was close to TT and looked up to him in many aspects, it also seems that at least for a time, he considered TT something of a buzzkill. He continued with his partying lifestyle despite TT's disapproval right up to the time of the bombings. I wonder what or who pushed DT over the ideological edge. I have no doubt that TT was a factor, but I also wonder if his growing interest in the turbulent history of his homeland and the surrounding region contributed to his shift. A new sense of nationalistic pride and grievance might have made him more accepting of TT's radical religious views. All MOO

TT himself was apparently into drinking, smoking, and chasing girls when he was DT's age. As DT got older, perhpas he was going to turn into the exact copy of his brother.

It just makes me wonder.... with TT missing, was there a flurry of phone calls to his phone or anyone from KRT wondering where he was for a couple of days? The hospital? Family or friends? Did KRT go to work during that time?

??? When was he missing? KRT reportedly called him after seeing his photos on TV. He was killed soon after that.

I do agree with this.

Sounds like a good idea to me. Only problem I see is that the family might not claim the body once it is there!!! They should have handled it in the manner the family of the Sandy Hook killer did. His remains were taken care of and the public does not know where it is.
