Instead of being Amish, could JD have been a Mormon who could have been excommunicated from his community? I read that teen boys are expelled from polygamous communities because they're seen as threats to the younger girls. It would explain the absence of drugs, the excellent teeth and why no one claimed him.
 
It would seem to me that they would be a bigger threat to the older males.
 
Just to keep it real and factual, the fundamental FLDS are NOT Mormons. They have their own beliefs that have NOTHING to do with the Mormon or LDS religion. The term "lost boys" is a nickname given to those young men that have been cast out of or have voluntarily left the FLDS communities.
