A 43-year-old man was shot to death Wednesday evening in the bustling Southlake Town Square.

The man, who was from Southlake was sitting in the passenger side of his car around 6:45 p.m. when a white SUV pulled up next to them, police said. The SUV’s passenger got out and opened fire, getting off at least five shots.

The shooter hopped back into the SUV and fled. The SUV was last seen driving westbound on Highway 1709.

The man was taken to Baylor Medical Center at Grapevine, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the man’s wife was in the driver’s seat at the time, and multiple witnesses saw the shooting.

Southlake Police Chief Steve Mylett said he believes the shooting, which was rare for the suburb, was targeted.

This will be a big story in the DFW area. The victim was a top exec. with a gambling corp. based in south Texas. Southlake is one of the most affluent cities in the nation.

I am shocked. I think the theory that it was a "hit" or MFH is a pretty easy one to believe. Southlake is really really beautiful and affluent. Amazing.

This morning fox4 said that the FBI is involved now due to possible ' drug cartel ' connections. Crazy! This is the town I grew up in ! My folks live across from town square and my son was working a block from that scene. But I had to text my son to tell him. It was all quiet in his job and they knew nothing was going on.
This guy was on scene with some good info.

Tis strange for sure. Heard a snippet of it while getting kid on bus but new something wasn't right. Southlake? Kind of like when they murdered Mark Hasse in Kaufman. Hard to believe that someone would be that coldblooded. ETA - Was wife in car or not, heard earlier she wasn't.

On the news, they said she was in car in driver's seat and he was in passenger. An earlier tweet by Brandon Todd Fox 4, said a '12 yr old was saying my dad was killed' so I don't know if the boy was in the car with them or perhaps inside a shop and came out to find them or what.

The man gunned down execution-style at the Southlake Town Center Wednesday was an attorney linked to a major Mexican drug cartel who had been living with his family in a secure, gated community with his wife and at least one child.

Four separate law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation identified the victim as Juan Jesus Guerrero-Chapa, 43, of Nuevo Leon, Mexico.

He has been named in various Mexican news reports as a lawyer for the Gulf Cartel, one of the largest and most violent drug organizations in Mexico.

The victim’s car is registered was Armando Guerrero-Chapa with a P.O. Box in Plano.

State records show that in December, 2010, Armando Guerrero and Juan Guerrero formed a gambling company called Siglo 21, based in a small town along the border near McAllen.

A webpage that appears to be Juan Guerrero’s LinkedIn profile says he is a rancher in Guanajuato and raises a “wide range of livestock and farm animals.”

This is crazy. I grew up in Grapevine.. back when Southlake was nothing but a few neighborhoods and some farmland. The high school was a tiny school off of Dove.

I have to admit when I first heard about this, I thought for sure it was a MFH by the wife.

To think a Mexican Drug Cartel hit could take place in Southlake is just insane.

I hope they find the suspects soon, although I'm thinking that's highly unlikely.

Well it may give the residents a bit of comfort that the man wasn't even an actual resident of Southlake, just staying there with friends . By the way I grew up in SL when it was nothing . I woudln't even say it had neighborhoods until the mid 80s or so . I went to that tiny high school. The nicest farm in all of SL is where the town square sits now.

Southlake police will not address reports concerning slain attorney’s alleged ties to Mexican cartel

Alfredo Corchado and Monique Madan reported last week that Juan Jesus Guerrero Chapa, gunned down in Southlake’s Town Square, was the personal attorney for Gulf cartel leader Osiel Cardenas, who’s behind bars for, among other things, drug trafficking and money laundering. An investigator would later tell Alfredo that the cartel likely ordered the killing because of “disputes over money and personal differences.” But just last night, KXAS-Channel 5 added this possible scenario to the mix: Guerrero Chapa was “a confidential informant for the U.S. government.”

Federal law enforcement officials have nothing to say about the Channel 5 report. Neither does the Southlake Police Department, which today released two new minor details concerning the murder — though nothing that addresses the attorney’s purported ties to the Gulf cartel.

Slain Drug Cartel Lawyer Was U.S. Informant

The Mexican drug cartel attorney who was slain execution-style in Southlake last week had been a confidential informant for the U.S. government, law enforcement sources told NBC 5.

Juan Guerrero Chapa, 43, had worked for the Department of Homeland Security Investigations, secretly providing inside information on cartel operations to American investigators.

Two men wanted in connection with a 2013 North Texas homicide appeared in federal court here Monday morning. U.S. Magistrate Judge Dorina Ramos charged Jesus Ledezma and Jose Luis Cepeda, both 58, with interstate stalking with the intent to kill...

The criminal complaint against the two men said they’d traveled to Southlake “and elsewhere” from Mexico between March 1, 2011, and the date of Guerrero’s homicide...

If convicted of the interstate stalking charge, the men could spend the rest of their lives in federal prison, but the sentencing judge also would have discretion to set a lower sentence.

Texas is becoming a real hotbed of cartel activity. This is way too close to home to be so many hours from the border.

Three People Arrested in Execution-Style Southlake Murder

Investigators said from the beginning the murder had all the markings of a professional hit.

NBC 5 reported soon after the shooting that Guerrero had been an informant for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations.

According to his indictment, Ledezma stalked Guerrero for more than two years before he was murdered. Ledezma was indicted on a charge of interstate stalking. Details of the charges against the other two men were not immediately released.

The father and son were police officers in San Pedro Garza Garcia, Mexico, which is a suburb of Monterrey, the third-largest city in Mexico, according to Mexican news reports and records obtained by NBC 5.

Guerrero and his family were also from the same city.

The suspects made several trips across the border to North Texas to stalk Guerrero Chapa while living in a rented Grapevine apartment, the records say. They allegedly used at least eight rented and purchased cars. A camera set up in his neighborhood captured Guerrero Chapa driving his Range Rover, which also had a tracking device attached underneath. And cameras were also aimed at the victim’s home, officials said.

Investigators got a break when they found the suspect vehicle abandoned in a business parking lot about a month after the shooting. They also found a tracking device underneath the Sequoia. Employees told investigators the vehicle had been sitting there for at least three weeks.

Agents contacted the company that provided the device and learned that there were five other tracking devices associated with that account. Investigators then used data from the surveillance devices as well as the suspects’ mobile phones to track their movements from Mexico to North Texas.

Three more people have been indicted in connection with the brazen murder of a Mexican drug cartel lawyer on Southlake's town square last year, bringing to six the number facing charges, according to court records.

The additional suspects have not been arrested and are believed to be hiding in Mexico.
