Bradley Manning cleared of 'aiding the enemy' but guilty of most charges. (Guardian)
• Bradley Manning convicted of multiple Espionage Act violations
• Acquitted of most serious 'aiding the enemy' charge
• Army private faces maximum jail sentence of 130 years
Bradley Manning, the source of the massive WikiLeaks trove of secret disclosures, faces a possible maximum sentence of more than 130 years in military jail after he was convicted of most charges on which he stood trial.

Colonel Denise Lind, the military judge presiding over the court martial of the US soldier, delivered her verdict in curt and pointed language. "Guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty," she repeated over and over, as the reality of a prolonged prison sentence for Manning – on top of the three years he has already spent in detention – dawned.

Travesty. I can't even comment without resorting to obscenities and anger. We might as well live in a freakin military dictatorship. :furious:

I dunno....I am curiously old-school on this one. (For example I oppose the death penalty except in cases of high treason.) I'll await his sentencing and I do hope it's not severe.

There has to be a non-punitive way for whistleblowers to get information out.

It is an outrage that Manning gets a harsh punishment, when the crimes his leaks revealed get no punishment whatsoever.

Sorry, my post should have read "potentially gets" a harsh punishment.

A potential 130 years is just an absolute outrage.

I was always and still am completely against the war against Iraq.

Having said that, he CHOSE to enter the military. He was NOT drafted. He chose to enter in 2008 so he should have realized what was happening over there.

Yes I realize Manning is likely crazy but he enlisted for a reason. He chose sides.

If it were up to me he would hang. He is a traitor and he would take a long dance at the end of a short rope.

There is a difference between signing up for a war that most of the nation had been propagandized into thinking was legitimate (and at 23 when he signed up, Manning had basically come of age with the whole nonsensical "war on terror"), and signing up for war crimes. I don't think many people, Manning included, knew what they were signing up for.

Bradley Manning: I want to live as a woman

Bradley Manning, the Army private sentenced to military prison for leaking classified documents, revealed he intends to live out the remainder of his life as a woman.

“I am Chelsea Manning. I am female,” the Army private wrote in a statement read on TODAY Thursday. “Given the way that I feel, and have felt since childhood, I want to begin hormone therapy as soon as possible. I hope that you will support me in this transition.”

Bradley Manning: I want to live as a woman

Yeah obviously Bradley has a number of problems. IMO he is not a hero he is a nutcase. Gender issues, taking military oaths and then turning traitor, there is nothing noble about this creature he is just really messed up.

He should have skipped the military and focused on having a sex change. Honestly he would pass better as a woman than a man anyway.

He was sentenced to 35 years.

Can we keep the gender policing away from this thread, which is supposed to be about Manning's conviction and now punishment?

35 years is absolutely outrageous. Especially, as I said earlier, given that those responsible for the actual crimes are not punished at all, or get off with a slap on the wrist.

The US government continues to demonstrate to the rest of the world that it is more interested in hiding the truth than it is in rooting out and abolishing human rights abuses and war crimes and criminals. Sad days.

I wish Ms Manning all the best, and so hoping that her request for pardon is granted. if she serves her sentence, hopefully she is able to live out her years with her dignity and rights intact.

Gender issues aside...actually not because he should never have signed up knowing the policies that are in place, but where were the psych folks who didn't see this when he was signing up? But aside from that, what he did was wrong and the potential harm that he could have done was immense. I need to know how people like him and like the other one can have access to this stuff? That is what I would like an answer to. Not how they did it, how were they able to do it, is it that easy? That is the scary part.

Well actually it was part of his defense! He said he had a "lot of various issues" or some such thing and that is why he made some bad judgement calls.

And Softail Mannings superior DID see the above photo but they hushed it up because they didn't want it circulating and causing embarrassment. There were probably numerous worrisome signs but for various reasons they were overlooked.

Thirty-five years is outrageous. He might as well have murdered civilians and US troops! Those who did so received lesser sentences than Bradly.

My goodness, the US soldier who killed four Canadian troops received ... drum roll ... thirty days house arrest!

The sentence is so insane, that it most likely can be appealled.

So far as I know, Manning has not had "the operation". But then, that's not really our business, and she didn't say. What Manning made our business was the fact that she intends to live as a woman in the future. She can do that whether or not she undergoes "the operation".

Uhhh...."she" will spend the next 35 years in Leavenworth. I don't see how "she" can live out her life as a "woman" when the Army has strict prison procedures and will treat Manning as a MALE.

"The Army does not provide hormone therapy or sex-reassignment surgery for gender identity disorder. The USDB has implemented risk assessment protocols and safety procedures to address high risk factors identified with the Prison Rape Elimination Act."

Manning said, either in letter or through her attorney, that she realizes that with or without the hormone therapy she will serve her time in the male unit (building? Prison? Watevs).

So long story short she knows she isn't going to get moved, no matter her decision to live as a woman.

She will, however, have access to mental health specialists while inside, so I do hope she gets help with the dysphoria and hormone therapy.

Legally not. It takes alot more than a declaration of intent.

A military spokesman told FOX 4 that this will not happen at Fort Leavenworth prison, where Manning will serve his time.

Manning, 25, was sentenced to 35 years in prison for leaking hundreds of thousands of U.S. military and diplomatic documents.

Military spokesperson George Marcec told FOX 4 that Manning will be evaluated when he arrives at the prison, as are all prisoners. Marcec said it is possible Manning could be diagnosed with ‘gender identification disorder’ but said he won’t be allowed to have surgery to change his gender or to undergo hormone therapy.

Obama commutes Chelsea Manning's sentence
As one of his final acts as outgoing president, Barack Obama commutedthe sentence being served by Chelsea Manning, a transgender soldier who is more than six years into a 35-year sentence for leaking classified government and military documents to the WikiLeaks website.

Manning is expected to be released in May of 2017.
