Obviously because he gave the emu ranch to the wrong person.
I would have put up a fence. We live down from a bayou and/or two rivers colliding or meeting or something like that. There are alligators that would love to eat emus. There's coyotes as well, who mostly subsist on a diet of cats, (some were mine) small dogs, not mine, baby cows (I get this word in English mixed up in spelling & I didn't want to confuse myself with that leg thing.) I just feel that Steely made a grievous error in not letting me have the farm.

A thirsty emu struts into a BC bar and asks the waiter for a Kokanee. The waiter brings the beer and the emu asks how much.*The waiter replies, "$5.00".*A few minutes later, the waiter says to the emu, "You must excuse me for staring, but you're the first emu we've served here!"*The emu looks at the waiter and says, "At $5 a beer, I’m not surprised!"
