The day I met serial killer Ivan Milat
by: CANDACE SUTTON

July 26, 2013

Serving seven life sentences at Supermax

IT IS early afternoon deep inside Supermax prison and serial killer Ivan Milat is punching the air in agitation.
Killers and rapists stare through the glass of their day rooms as the jail's most infamous inmate tries to argue a point about one of the young backpackers he shot and stabbed to death in the Belanglo Forest.

I'm standing just one metre away.

Peter Letcher may be serial killer Ivan Milat's eighth victim

July 22, 2013

AN 18-year-old who was stabbed and then shot, execution style, and his body covered with branches in the Jenolan State Forest forest west of Sydney is serial killer Ivan Milat's eighth victim, says the former task force commander who led the backpacker murder investigation.
Following Milat's conviction in 1996 for the murder of seven backpackers, police reconsidered dozens of unsolved murder cases to see whether the victims could have been slain by Milat.

Milat is a sick, sick person for what he did to those people. Don't believe the garbage he has spewed about him being innocent either. His mother, shortly before her death, visited him in prison and asked him straight up if he had committed the murders. He told her he had. Why would a mother, who's natural instinct is to protect her child, confess to such a thing unless it were the truth? If they released Milat tomorrow it would only be a matter of time before he reoffended. It's who he is. He's a murderer, plain and simple.

wow, those guys have it good - a shower and microwave and tv in their cell and a personal 'backyard' (even if tiny) ...

Milat went on a hunger strike several years back because he wanted a Playstation put in his cell. If you can believe that.

See thats the kinda stuff that interests me not what he wanted crap but as soon as these high profile cases end say in court that's generally it .To me anyway I wish there would be follow ups on some of these monsters .Who wouldn't wanna see what scott peterson looks like now and hopefully hear some stories about how he is in a relationship with his cell mate lol Nah you know what i mean things get so hightend so interesting when its going on then poof thier gone and yes ofcourse i know alot of people will say thats good dont waste another minute on them and i get that part too i do but what can i say for myself i find that kinda stuff like the above articles and pics very interesting..

I think there has been a lot of follow up on Milat, though. He's a by-word here, our version of Manson or Gacy.. Perhaps that's not translated overseas, though.

I am 99% sure I met a Milat (not Ivan, he was too fair for Ivan, but he facially very similar, IYKWIM) while hitching in the late 80's. It was not a pleasant experience. I felt very lucky that he "let me go" (his words). This was not close to Milat's hunting ground, and he seemed to stick to that one territory. But this was not so for some of the people close to him, who are said to be similarly violent in nature and were suspected accomplices.. People who look a LOT like the man I met on the highway..

Anyway. I do think he had help. Or 'competition', from somebody close to him. My own experience basically backs that up. I always thought there'd be more bodies - and there were. I've also thought that there's even more bodies nowhere near Belanglo..

Today on ABC radio's Richard Fidler's conversations program, he spoke with former police detective Clive Small who led the investigation into the backpacker murders & they discuss quite a bit about Clive's new book, Milat: Inside Australia's Biggest Manhunt.

Clive mentioned the majority of the case against Milat revolved around circumstantial evidence.

A VERY riveting interview & I'm now really looking forward to reading the book!!

I heard the interview too and can't wait to read the book. Even the name Milat gives me chills though.

I love how the dummy slips up and admits his guilt in this impromptu interview:

Milat starts talking about his sister, Shirley Soire. Milat and Ms Soire were close. Milat was living with her at the time of his arrest and it was in her house that many of the seven murdered backpackers' belongings were found.
Police interviewed Ms Soire on several occasions, and the task force denied any suspicion fell on her.
But the (since deceased) Sydney lawyer John Marsden has made a public statement saying he suspected Ms Soire's involvement in the murders, and the connection clearly affects Milat.
"You said she was connected," Milat fumes to Small, "she wasn't, she ..."
Mr Small smiles. "No, Ivan," he said. "I've always said you acted alone."
"Yes, so why are you saying that . . . "
Milat stops. He and Small look at each other.
Milat has never admitted his guilt, and maybe he will never again come this close to doing so.
He looks away and retreats into his cell.

He looks exactly like I'd imagine a creepy serial killer would look like. No disarming Ted Bundy good looks going on with him, yikes.

His face gives me the ultimate creeps and chills. I have a fear of clowns and he looks like an evil clown.

Thanks for that Marly. Nice to know he has got his just desserts.
Now the next generation is following in his footsteps with his nephew in gaol for murder. There is obviously something mentally not right with this family. JMOO

Unidentified girl / woman "Angel" was found in Belangalo state forest - where all of Milat's victims were found!

BUT,

Forensic pathologists place her remains there from 6 - 10 years in 2011, so they THINK she MAY have been placed there AFTER Ivan Milat was sentenced and jailed... thus not one of his victims.

However, Milat's young NEPHEW was later convicted of a axe murder in Belangalo forest & there's questions whether "Angel" may be one of his victims possibly.

Will we ever know - who Angel is?

Backpacker killer Ivan Milat & Anatoly Onoprienko among the serial killers who did it for thrills

August 14, 2014

BEST-selling crime author Amanda Howard takes you on a chilling journey into the terrifying minds of eight serial killers who did it just for the thrill, in this extract from her book Murder on the Mind.

(WARNING: graphic content)

The Thrill Killer is a term used to define the ‘grey area’ between the categories of serial killer and mass murderer that is not covered by the ‘spree’ killer (someone who kills several people in a short period of time).

The key difference between the thrill killer and the broader serial killer is that in the former there is no functional need to kill.

Have often wondered if Ivan was The Balaclava rapist/murderer that was around Tweed Heads on the Gold Coast in the early eighties. I'm sure I have read somewhere he was in the area at the time. Can anyone point me to a thread on that case?

Ivan Milat reveals female fans in new book of letters

The book is titled The Milat Letters and compiled by the killer's nephew Alistair Shipsey, who also believes his uncle was at least partially framed by authorities.
"He may have done a couple (of killings) but I don’t think he did them all," Mr Shipsey said.
The serial killer also apparently exercises a dark fascination for some letter-writers.
In another letter, Milat seems puzzled at why women from as far as the USA would write to him, given his reputation.
