It's certainly possible, though we generally see that in the winter with heaters.

I also don't know of any power outages in the area...
and I would think if it was from recreational activities they wouldn't have been at home at the time.

I also wondered about her overdosing the child and then having a mental break.
I am very relieved to know he wasn't beaten to death, or strangled, etc.
 
I trust that ME will find the cause of death of this poor little one. I believe that whatever happened to cause the death of Eli will be discovered, but the mother holds the key to the answers. Poor little Eli. Rip, little one.
 
However, investigators said they have ruled out carbon monoxide as the reason his mother was sick or why the boy died.

Haven't seen anything else new... or an obituary for Eli.
My Aunt died on June 23rd and we are still awaiting her final autopsy report - pending toxicology.

Her cause of death was Pulmonary Emboli, but it can't be final until toxicology is complete.
Hopefully Eli's will be faster since my Aunt was a natural death with no major investigation.

(Relevant because it's the same ME's office, for those who don't know.)
 
The mother of a 2-year-old boy who died mysteriously in September was charged Friday with murder.

Heidi Marie Rutchey, 42, was charged in 1st District Court with murder, a first-degree felony.

In 2002, the court was informed that Rutchey was admitted to the state hospital in Idaho for five months, court records state.

RIP little Eli. Hard to write that since I have an Eli. What ever took place, I hope it went quickly and painless.

"Forensic tests determined that Eli had already been dead a week or more when law enforcement found his body. Court documents say the boy died as early as Aug. 27."

and

"After she was taken into custody, Rutchey told officers she had suffocated her son by placing her hand over his mouth and nose, the probable cause statement states. She then tried to kill herself by overdosing on medication."


So tragic. From the sounds of it, she has long standing mental issues that were obviously not being dealt with.

Swink said Rutchey was evaluated by two separate evaluators who both said she is presently incompetent.
However, they do believe that with treatment, her competency will be restored and she will be able to assist her attorney in her defense.

The comments on this article claim Eli had Down syndrome.
I have heard the same rumors when locals mention this case...

A 43-year-old River Height's mother remains in the Utah State Hospital, reportedly still incompetent to stand trial in the death of her two-year-old son.

Defense attorney David Perry appeared in 1st District Court Monday for Heidi Marie Rutchey's review hearing. Perry said hospital administrators told him, they have not been able to restore Rutchey's competency and she remains in Orem, receiving treatment...

During Monday's review hearing, Judge Brandon Maynard scheduled another review hearing, January 25, 2016 to assess if Rutchey can then stand trial.

Where's the boy's father in all of this?? No mention of his involvement with last seeing son in MSM. I realize that the mom is still in hospital and we know of her involvement but I have not seen any MSM links about the dad.
 
Jan 2015:

A year ago, when Rutchey was initially ordered to the state hospital for treatment, she told Judge Thomas Willmore: "But I'm not. Your honor, I'm not. I'm not incompetent."

Rutchey also told the judge she had information about "Palestine" and asked someone to call the FBI because she had "information."...

While at the hospital, the mother was distraught, court documents state. She called herself a "baby killer" and told hospital personnel that "something terrible has happened" and "he suffocated in the tub."

I wonder if she even did anything to him. He may have died of natural causes and his death tipped her over the edge.

An autopsy listed the cause of death as "undetermined." The mother was later charged with murder. Rutchey, who said she is bipolar, allegedly told investigators she placed her hand over the child's mouth and nose until he died, then attempted to end her own life by overdosing on medication
