HOUSTON (KTRK) -- It was a cold blooded murder. Now four suspects are accused of a deadly robbery at a local Denny's restaurant. During that robbery, a customer was shot and killed as he tried to protect children from the violent suspects. Two of them are now in custody but two others are still at large.

PORT ARTHUR — A Port Arthur native and Katy resident who was shot to death trying to shield children during a violent armed robbery at a Houston Denny’s restaurant is being lauded as a hero.

Greig Placette, 64, was shot twice, once in the chest and once in the shoulder while trying to protect children inside the restaurant who were dining with their family at a table next to his, said The Rev. David Placette, Greig Placette’s cousin.

Has the one who had a previous felony bonded out, or was for a different thing before the cops got a tip about the robbery and murder? I didn't quite understand.

Yes, police had all three suspects in custody about an hour after the robbery/murder, but that was for unrelated incident so they were let go. Then after police identified them as suspects in robbery/murder, they were arrested, except for the one who is on the run.

One of four men accused of killing a customer and wounding an employee at a Houston restaurant in 2013 agreed Tuesday to testify against his partners in exchange for a reduced sentence of 40 years in prison.

Just minutes before his trial was set to begin, Kenya D. Jackson admitted responsibility and gave details of the robbery of the Denny's restaurant on Washington Street near Interstate 10.

(...)

If Jackson testifies truthfully against the others, prosecutors will reduce the charges against him to aggravated robbery and agree to 40-year sentence. He will not be eligible for parole until he has served at least half of that time.

(...)

Jackson was arrested with Leroy Houston, 21, and cousins Mario Hilton, 20, and Corey Hilton. Corey Hilton died of an aggressive form of cancer while waiting to go to trial. He would have been 23 next week.
