"Bond is set at $1 million for a Louisiana man accused of shooting and killing a church pastor as he preached in Lake Charles, Louisiana, on Friday night.
Calcasieu Parish sheriff's deputies arrested 53-year-old Woodrow Karey, a church deacon, and charged him with second-degree murder, after he called 911 and told the dispatcher what he had done, sheriff's spokeswoman Kim Myers said..."

Says here the perp was a deacon.... so they did know each other.
Sad way to go for the pastor.

Have been looking around on MSM and cannot find any kind of motive.

That's horrible. Who'd even think of such a thing?

Thanks Elley Mae!
Rape? Wow, I imagined someone upset over an overlooked deacon position.
Say.

RSBM

Sounds as if we have a possible motive.
Wonder if it started as an affair and went 'south' ?
Still a sad way to handle things. Yes, the "perp" (if he was one) is deceased ; but you 'lose' your own life as well !!

No pastor should be texting women unless it's an emergency. There may have been no relationship other than helping the woman though.

Surely sounds like it "went south" when her husband found out!

First time I have read the story but I saw the headline a few times and every time I thought "He must have been sexing up someone some way or how and it backfired".

When I read the article before it was posted here I too thought OK how long will this take to unfold into a who is messing with who story.

o/t I live on a dead end rd that is a mile long with only 3 residents and on Sunday evenings after services the preacher from one of the many churches in the area meets a woman about 3/4 of the way down the rd. Been doing it for years, or so I've been told.

From what's being reported, it appears to me wife only accused pastor of rape after her hubby accused her of having sex with the pastor.

From the link mentioned in a post above ( http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/01/us/louisiana-pastor-killed/index.html?hpt=hp_t2 )
"Karey told authorities that a week earlier he'd found text messages from his wife to the pastor. He believed, Mancuso said, that they were having sex and he confronted his wife. Days after the confrontation, Karey's wife filed the police report accusing the pastor of rape, Mancuso said. Authorities had not yet investigated the rape accusation by Karey's wife. "We had not had an opportunity yet," Mancuso said. "Before we go to an accuser, we like to get the facts straight before we begin questioning."

This ought to be interesting. I imagine the texts will reveal the true nature of their relationship

Karey indicted on lesser charge in shooting death of Lake Charles pastor

On Thursday afternoon, a Calcasieu Parish grand jury indicted Woodrow Karey Jr. for manslaughter instead of the second-degree murder charge he was originally booked for.

Pastor's family disagrees with manslaughter indictment

Harris's daughter Talisha Jacko says the family disagrees that manslaughter is the appropriate charge and wishes they would have been allowed to testify before the grand jury.

"Manslaughter would be like a crime of passion, but in our statements to the detectives we did state that he was laughing when he walked through. The first shot he was laughing and when he shot him at close range he was also laughing," said Jacko.

District Attorney John DeRosier won't discuss the facts of the case but says the grand jury saw the evidence.

"They heard all of the evidence and made their decision based on the evidence

A judge has granted a motion to quash the second-degree murder indictment against Woodrow Karey, the man accused of fatally shooting a Lake Charles pastor in 2013...

Karey was first indicted on a manslaughter charge but a different grand jury came back with second-degree murder.

In his ruling, Davis said both the prosecution and defense had agreed to "live with the result of the initial grand jury -- either manslaughter or second-degree murder."

Court rules man accused of shooting pastor to be charged with manslaughter

The state Supreme Court this week determined that a Lake Charles man accused of fatally shooting pastor Ronald Harris, 51, during a revival service at Tabernacle of Praise in 2013 will be charged with manslaughter instead of second-degree murder.

In its ruling, the high court said there was adequate evidence supporting the defense’s claim that the prosecution had agreed to abide by the initial grand jury results. It ruled that the prosecution, having gained an “unfair advantage” by using the defense’s witnesses, unjustly withdrew from the agreement.

La. Supreme Court throws out second-degree murder indictment in Woodrow Karey case

"Based upon pressure from the family, they decided to renege on the deal seven-and-a-half months later," defense attorney Todd Clemons said. "They claim in pleadings, they claimed before the state Supreme Court that there was some newly discovered evidence. We're four years later, we're about to have a trial, we haven't seen any newly discovered evidence. There is no newly discovered evidence."

However, Calcasieu D.A. John DeRosier says there is new evidence, which will be revealed down the road.

Woodrow Karey pleads not guilty to manslaughter charge

It's now more than four years since police say Karey shot and killed Pastor Ronald Harris, in front of his congregation, at Tabernacle of Praise Worship Center in Lake Charles.

The defense won the legal battle over whether it was fair for Karey to be charged with murder-- so he's now charged with the lesser offense of manslaughter.

Karey's trial is set for Tuesday, January 16, 2018.

Because inclement weather set back proceedings in state district court this week, the manslaughter trial of a man accused of fatally shooting a pastor in a church has been delayed until April.

Woodrow Karey Jr. is accused of walking into Tabernacle of Praise Worship Center during a revival service on Sept. 27, 2013, and shooting Ronald J. Harris Sr., 51, twice with a shotgun.

Jury selection begins in Woodrow Karey manslaughter case

Jury selection is underway in the trial of Woodrow Karey who is charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of a Lake Charles pastor.

He was charged with second-degree murder, but after lengthy legal wrangling, he's now on trial for manslaughter.

The state is seeking what's called a "firearm enhancement" which means, if convicted, the minimum sentence would be 20 years. Whereas, without the enhancement, a manslaughter sentence is anywhere from 0 to 40 years incarcerated.

Woodrow Karey found not guilty in shooting death of Pastor Ronald Harris

Woodrow Karey has been found not guilty in the killing of Pastor Ronald Harris September 27, 2013. He was charged with manslaughter.

To many it's a stunning verdict considering Karey admits he killed the local pastor in front of his congregation in 2013.

After three hours the jury found him not guilty even though 40 or 50 people saw him kill Harris with a shotgun. Karey did not appear on camera, but his defense lawyers are jubilant.

But it's not justice to Harris's family or to Calcasieu First assistant D.A. Cynthia Killingsworth who says, over her entire career she's never been so disappointed in a verdict.

"I'm extremely disappointed for the family, for the victim's family, for all the congregation, for all the children that were in that church, all the people that were in that church, they're scarred for life, our community, I think it's legalized murder. That's what it is," said Killingsworth.
