NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A man and a 7-month-old boy have been fatally shot in an apparent ambush on a New Orleans bridge.

Police spokesman Frank B. Robertson III told The Associated Press that someone opened fire on the 25-year-old man Wednesday night as he rode in the back seat of a black Honda Accord on the Crescent City Connection bridge.

Robertson says the boy was in a car seat beside the man. He says a woman who was driving and another woman who was a front-seat passenger were not hurt.

The boy was taken to a hospital, where he died.

The shooting happened just past the toll plaza area on the West Bank entrance to the bridge.

Robertson says police do not have a named suspect, but believe the shooter knew the man.

The gunfire is believed to have come from a black sport utility vehicle with at least two people inside, Serpas said at a news conference. Butler was hit four times; his son, once.

Police do not have a named suspect but believe the shooter knew Butler. Police would not say whether Butler had been armed.

One of two men accused of killing a man and his 7-month-old son during a drive-by shooting last year in Algiers was sentenced to spend four decades in prison for his role in the crime.

Isaac Pierre, 21, pleaded guilty Friday to two counts of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.

He and Kevin Thomas, 24, were arrested Dec. 5, 2013 on suspicion of killing 7-month-old Deshawn Kinard and 25-year-old Deshawn Butler, the infant’s father and the intended target of a shower of bullets rained on their car during a drive-by shooting Nov. 13, 2013, in Algiers.

Not sure if the charges against Kevin Thomas are still pending or if he pleaded as well.
