Didn't see a thread for this man. There was a mention of him on the local Boston news this evening. Apparently, he was exhumed about a year ago and now has a recon.

In December of 2012, the Salem New Hampshire Police Department, in conjunction with the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office, re-opened an unsolved homicide that took place in 1969. The homicide came to light on August 7, 1969, when a road crew discovered the partially decomposed body of an adult white male in a small pit of water off of I-93 in Salem, New Hampshire.

Further investigation revealed that the adult male victim had been shot four times. It was estimated that the victim was between 28 and 40 years old at the time of his death, 5 feet 10 inches tall, and weighed approximately 225 pounds. Despite exhaustive efforts, no identification has ever been made of the victim.

This is my hometown and I have followed this very very closely for a very long time.... we are truly hoping this will help get him identified and help a family that is missing someone have closure.... ultimately it would be great if justice could be brought upon the perp responsible if they are still alive..... this man has been unidentified since 1969!!!!!

Bumping again. I am going to be writing and doing more research on this case with Salem, NH Police Dept and State Police Cold Case Unit beginning next week. Fellow WS'ers Please join in convo with me and see if we can help authorities at least identify this man....

Nice to see a fellow Salemite on here. I grew up in Salem, still live in the area, all the family is cloistered around here. This would have been my mum's era, she'd have been in middle school. This case actually made me join WS, and is the case my signature is describing.

Do we know if LE ever finished the DNA testing? Given the proximity to the highway, and with Salem being a border town, he very easily could have been from Methuen, Haverhill, or even further out into MA. But they never mention whether he was found next to the Southbound side or the Northbound side---has anyone ever entertained the possibility he could be from further north, or more likely, further south? The description on the Doe Network was that he was wearing a shirt with "Bradlees Superstore" on it; some google searching turned up a blog post about the store and the Wikipedia article on Stop and Shop. Seems they purchased the chain in 61' and sold it in 92'. It went bankrupt in 1995 and was completely gone by 01'. Bradlees originated in CT.

The blog posting mentions that although it was bought out, S&S didn't open any Bradlees outside of CT till the 70's. With that in mind, the victim may have been from the CT area, either in the state, or in southern MA or RI (since it's not unheard of to get a job in a neighboring state if it's close enough). It's possible it could have just been a t-shirt, but I'm thinking they meant they found him in a shirt with the logo on it, like an employee of the chain would wear. Bradlees is gone now, but it's a tidbit to go on, especially if there are family accounts of a relative working there. Even if it was just a shirt, he'd have to have bought it at one of the locations in CT.

Using this info, if the victim WAS from CT, the killer would have had to connect to 93 from a different highway, since 93 runs diagonally from the lower Boston area up to northern VT. 93 connects to 95, which runs up and down the entire east coast. On the northern side, it connects to 91, which runs from New Haven, CT all the way up through the Canadian border.

The blog had a Bradlees store locator, and even a list of Bradlees in CT with dates of opening and closing. If someone had excess time (hell, I might tomorrow night after I'm off-shift), it's possible to create a database of open Bradlees in the CT area from 1969 and before, and cross-reference it with missing males reported from CT around that time. I doubt there are many missing cases, though, there never are from that time period.

If he wasn't from the area, and moved there from elsewhere, it's also possible (but less likely) that he may have come from the north. My grandparents immigrated to the US from Canada in the early 50's, and moved to Salem a few years after. There was a small-medium Canadian community in the general region, to my knowledge, at least based off the amount of friends my grandparents have/had in the area from Canada. :0

He's buried in the same cemetery as my family. I actually passed by it today on the way home. It's really eerie to think about, and extremely sad. :[

Hello, John Gaydosh, missing from CT since 1963, might be a potential match. I think they kind of resemble each other.

He's around the right height, but is slimmer than the UID. Beyond that, the decedent died a week prior to being found in 69', what would John have been doing for 6 years?

NamUS states that the date missing is approximate, and that his car was found in a nearby pond not long after. That points to accident or local murder, to me. Still worth checking out, but I doubt he's ours. :\

I know the height and weight are off, so is the age if it really is 28 to 40, but I always think of William when I see this case. The recon is pretty similar and the circumstances seem to fit to me. I mean, his family did think that he may have been running to Canada to avoid the draft and if he was traveling from Minnesota to Montreal it is possible that he would have had to pass through NH. I know it's a long shot but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway.

A new article on this man's case...

http://www.wmur.com/article/new-ham...file-unidentified-man-found-in-salem/15236474

PETERBOROUGH, N.H. —

Authorities are hoping to solve a case that has been cold for nearly 50 years.

On Aug. 7, 1969, the remains of an unidentified white man were found on the side of I-93, between the Pelham Road exit ramp and Rockingham Boulevard in Salem.

The remains were discovered by a road work crew in a water-filled pit on the side of the road. The victim was in a state of decomposition when he was found, suggesting he had been dead for some time before he was found.

The victim was shot four times, including twice in the head, once in the torso and once in the neck.

If that's a better composite of his face heaven knows what they had before.

Since they exhumed him why did they not do a 3D scan of his skull and build a likeness from that? There's really no excuse for producing these dreadful high school art project sculpture efforts these days.
