Something doesn't seem right here. Even if the dogs were playing with the baby, one of the parents - especially the dad sleeping in the same room - should've heard screams. :(

RIP, sweet one.

Family dogs kill baby on West Side

....Mia was on the couch with her father, who was asleep, when she apparently fell from the couch and the dogs caused injuries that led to her death, said Sgt. Steven Little, of the first-shift homicide squad.

Little said the dogs — both Shiba Inus — didn’t attack the baby, but rather appeared to be playing roughly with her.

Little said it appears as if the death was caused by the dogs, although the baby had no major trauma visible....

I'll just say I'm glad an autopsy is being done. The dog going to the mother's door to wake her up is strange. Usually when dogs start biting on something they don't let go until pulled off.

I wish they had done toxicology tests on the parents, but I'm sure they didn't.

Wait, The dogs killed the baby but there was no signs of attack?? That does not sound right to me..

Shiba Inus are fairly small dogs too.

AKC Standard:
Ranging in size from 13 ½ to 16 ½ inches tall at the shoulder and 17 to 23 pounds.

Seconded. Our news reporting is awful. I sat in for a trial a few months ago where the media reporting was shameful - they weren't even in the courtroom during the trial/verdict, and what they were reporting was factually incorrect and completely biased. You're lucky to get a good sense of what happened once you check all the local sources.

The baby was a premie and just came home from the hospital TWO weeks ago???

How on earth did this happen especially when the parents were supposedly sleeping? Unless the dogs jumped up and inside the babies crib I don't see how they are NOT responsible!

Now the news reports keep saying "the dogs will likely be euthanized" and of course they won't bother to run bite tests to even confirm whether BOTH dogs were involved. Likely the dog's owners won't care one way or the other if one dog is innocent they just want to make sure THEY don't face charges.

i agree about the various news sources, but there seems to be some truth there as well in the original article.

It sounds to me like this little baby may have been more fragile, due to being a preemie and in the hospital for what seems like 2 1/2 months. Even if she fell off the sofa and the dogs played with her (which I still find odd), something that simple may be enough to cause her death. But it doesn't seem like it was the biting. She had tooth marks and small puncture wounds, but it wasn't an attack in the sense that the dogs really mauled her.

Perhaps she went into shock or the fall was too much? I just don't understand how the dogs could leave puncture wounds that went through clothing but the baby has no other outward signs of injury. Seems like there would be more if her death has been caused by the dogs.

I still have a nagging feeling in the back of my head that something else happened, though.

I think the baby was sleeping on the sofa with the dad, and the dad fell asleep - and the baby rolled off. We co-slept with our babies, but never ever on the sofa. I really think there is more to this sad sad story...

has a high prey drive and quick reflexes and will pursue anything that moves.

How terribly sad. :tears:

Also, from your link:
Dog aggression is a common breed trait. Cats are iffy around many Shibas, and small caged pets will be stalked and probably dispatched with.

Oh wow. That is very sad. I do hope the dogs aren't put down, though, and can find another home without infants or small animals...

Mia’s mother, Sabrena L. Gibson, 34, was in her bedroom when one of the dogs at the bedroom door woke her, Little said. She went into the living room and found her daughter injured. Mia’s father, Chris Kusumi, 33, told detectives he had slept through it all.

If the above is accurate and the parents did NOT witness the incident how on earth are they saying BOTH dogs were responsible?

Reminds me of a sad story involving a rescuer a year or so ago, she had a few dogs of her own and took in two mastiffs, something happened and the dogs killed her (likely the mastiff foster dogs) yet her parents who lived separately had every single dog she owned killed because they were all in the house at the time. I bet that rescuer was rolling in her grave if she knew they had done that.
