A Salina couple was booked into jail for murder and child abuse on Friday.

Around 7:30 a.m. Friday morning, 27-year-old Nicholas Jordan Corbin and 20-year-old Desirah Nichole Overturf were booked into the Saline County Jail on charges of first degree murder, child abuse and aggravated kidnapping.

Earlier today, KSAL Radio reported that a 3-month-old baby boy died around 10:30 p.m. Thursday night in south Salina.

Dear God in Heaven....... does Kansas have the death penalty?

---
A Salina Police Department spokesman said earlier today that the death of a 3-month-old boy found unresponsive was under investigation. Officers were called to a home in south Salina at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday.

The child was pronounced dead at the scene, and an adult male and adult female were taken into custody for questioning, Lt. Sean Morton said. He would not say if the adults were the child’s parents.

Lt. Allen Salzman declined late Friday afternoon to say whether the arrests of Overturf and Corbin were in connection with the child’s death. He said the investigation was in its very early stages, and that more information would be released later.

The Facebook pages for both Overturf and Corbin mention that they are engaged to one another, and both Facebook pages contain photos of an infant boy.
Overturf’s Facebook page notes that the boy was born Sept. 29.

so if they kidnapped their own child, then I presume he must've previously been removed from their custody

I think we can all guess the reasons for such removal

rest peacefully baby boy

WTF! Per his fb page.

i love having a gun that shoots exploding orphan children at enemies

I caught that and that was my first response as well. I am thinking 9it is a reference to some weapon used in a popular video game or something but I have never heard of it before. Googling now.

Yes, but I don't know what criteria is involved. In some states, murder has to be in addition to another felony, like kidnapping, to make the crime DP eligible.

Just guessing, but from the charges posted by The Cheese, the DP will be an option, but who knows what else will transpire between now and trial: negotiate for a plea to avoid it, etc.

ETA - Found this on deathpenaltyinfo.org: Kansas - Capital murder with 8 aggravating circumstances (KSA 21-3439, KSA 21-4625, KSA 21-4636). The aggravating circumstances:

Kansas-
(1)The murder was especially heinous, atrocious, cruel, or depraved (or involved torture)
(2) The defendant knowingly created a grave risk of death for one or more persons in addition to the victim of the offense
(3) The murder was committed for pecuniary gain or pursuant to an agreement that the defendant would receive something of value
(4) The defendant caused or directed another to commit murder, or the defendant procured the commission of the offense by payment, promise of payment, or anything of pecuniary value
(5) The murder was committed to avoid or prevent arrest, to effect an escape, or to conceal the commission of a crime
(6) The defendant has been convicted of, or committed, a prior murder, a felony involving violence, or other serious felony
(7) The murder was committed by a person who is incarcerated, has escaped, is on probation, is in jail, or is under a sentence of imprisonment
(8)The murder was committed against a witness in a criminal or civil proceeding to prevent the witness from appearing

Salina's Christina Murphy says she stopped by the home just hours before police were called. She says Nick Corbin had posted in a Facebook group, he had some children's building blocks to give away. At her mother's request, she went to pick those blocks up at around 7:30 p.m. Thursday night.

"I knocked on the door and from the outside it didn't look like any lights were on inside," Murphy said in a telephone interview Friday night. "A man answered the door and it was just cracked open enough to stick his face out so I could see who he was."

The pregnant mother of three says that seemed strange.

They say Nick Corbin posted December 21st asking if anyone had any baby food they didn't need.

In the post, Corbin says, "I can't feed my son formula at the moment, so I have to feed him baby jars and plastic container foods."

But they say at the time, they had no reason to think much more of it.

According to the news release, the results of an autopsy conducted Friday are pending, but police are investigating the death as a homicide.

"This investigation is currently under review by the Saline County Attorney's Office who will file formal charges against Desirah Overturf and Nicholas Corbin," the release reads.
The Facebook pages for both Overturf and Corbin show the two as being engaged to one another, and both Facebook pages contain photos of an infant boy. Overturf's Facebook page indicates that the boy was born Sept. 29.

The police department is asking anyone with information relevant to the investigation to call 826-7210.

I didn't see anything overtly alarming or evil on their fb pages. IMHO....they don't seem to be very bright.

That poor little baby. There's just no excuse for harming a helpless infant.

aside from Nick's comment about the gun that shoots orphan babies I saw nothing alarming on their FB pages either. they do not seem to be prolific posters although their privacy settings may just be showing what they want seen by the public. Not sure if there is a way to see if there is a ton of "hidden" stuff.

They seemed quite pleased with the baby, posting cute pics, etc. I did not see a bunch of farmville or whatever that would indicate they may be neglectful in favor of online time.

I wish the reports were more clear on WHAT abuse LE thinks was perpetrated upon this lil guy. All we know is emergency responders found an unresponsive baby. Were there obvious signs of trauma? Was the child starved, neglected, what?

I did notice a post from Desirah on her FB that expressed excitement about an impending (12-24-13) visit for their child who is around 3 months old to be able to visit with grandpa and an aunt. Someone commented beneath in a way that indicated the visit turned out to be a disappointment or upsetting in some way.

Respectfully snipped and BBM WTH is this about??? 3-month olds DO NOT eat baby and/or "container???" foods???

I agree, that is very puzzling and I have not figured it out. That was my first thought as well - 3 months? 3 month old's do not NOT need formula or breastmilk. So why would he think he "can't" feed his baby formula and should feed him baby jarred food??

I know tclya - I mean, I am sure that they would qualify for WIC FGS...
