SAN ANTONIO Just eight hours into 2014, San Antonio recorded its first homicide of the year when a disabled man was bludgeoned to death with a sledgehammer.
Eliseo Rosendo Altamirano had been at a party in the 2400 block of Wyoming Street on the East Side that ran deep into the morning of New Year's Day.
Sometime before 9 a.m., police say, there was an argument and another man was killed.
There were two men sitting there, and they had been drinking all night, said Sandy Gutierrez, SAPD spokeswoman. One of them then took a sledgehammer and hit the victim over the head several times, killing him.
Gutierrez said Altamirano didn't flee when police arrived. Investigators interviewed witnesses there and also had compelling evidence at the scene enabling them to make the arrest, Gutierrez said.

While police didn't name the victim, an uncle, David Gonzalez, identified him as Albert Gonzalez, 27.
David Gonzalez said his nephew had spinal bifida.
