Very little info out there considering the length of time she has been missing. I can find no details as to why she is considered "at risk" or the circumstances under which she went missing. It is so frustrating! Hoping she is somewhere safe.

The Sept. 12, 2013 post at the link Thinkerbell posted concerns me

Very interesting...so she obviously had to do with marijuana according to that FB post.

Maine woman, 23, reported missing in California -
Danielle Bertolini, aka Danielle Brooks

BANGOR, Maine —
A young woman who grew up in Penobscot County has been reported missing in California.

Danielle Bertolini, 23, was reported missing to Fortuna, Calif., police on Feb. 19. Her family last had contact with her on Jan. 29.

Her mother, Bobbie-Jo Dick of Plymouth, said Monday that this is unusual behavior for Bertolini, who usually maintains daily contact with her sister. Dick described Bertolini as an at-risk missing person with a medical condition. Bertolini attended Nokomis High School in Newport.

Dick said she was flying west Tuesday to meet with family and friends from Oregon who have been helping search for the missing woman in California.

Here is the FB page set up for Danielle. It's a little confusing because they post links to other missing persons on the page, so you have to scroll down for Danielle.

Her mother was interviewed on KOBI5 in Medford, Oregon tonight. I will try to post a link later. Her mother said she was born in Medford and has friends here, so they think she might be in southern Oregon. She said Danielle is bipolar, not on meds, and has had addiction problems.

ETA: Here is the link to the KOBI news story. Her poor Mom. Heartbreaking.

Her personal FB page is rather concerning. If she grows pot and has disappeared in Humboldt county (a major marijuana-growing area), it does not bode well for her. We moved away from there almost 30 years ago in part because it was so dangerous. Nowadays, heroin and meth make it even worse.

Hearing the mother's pain is heart-wrenching. No matter how old your child gets to be, they're still your "babies" and not knowing where they are has to be devastating.

I hope she is found safe. Prayers for her mom, her sister, and all her family.

I read on her sisters FB that 2 girls Danielle knew were to fault? No idea what that means but her sister is very upset. Did they say what the addictions were?

I read that too and wondered what two girls she was talking about. There was also some all caps trash talking on her page that I couldn't make sense of.

No, they didn't say what the addictions are.

So sad.

Glad to know I wasn't the only one mystified on who it was directed to. It was a shared link from a newsite, is there comments on the news place?

When it comes to Humboldt County news, I like to read The Lost Coast Outpost, an alternative paper that often goes into more depth than MSM. They posted the press release about Danielle. The comments section gets pretty wild, but someone anonymous commented that they should check two addresses on Highway 36. They are in the vicinity of Swain's Flat which was mentioned as a location for Danielle. For one of the addresses, I was able to find a name online. I'm probably not the first one to submit this tip to the Fortuna Police Dept, but I hope they check it out. Danielle needs to be found.

I checked out the comments on the news site and didn't see anything but support. Perhaps a nasty comment was deleted after the sister reacted.

People can be really mean. The comments section in the Lost Coast Outpost I mentioned above has some horrible stuff. But it also has people trying to help, so you have to wade through the garbage in hopes of finding a possible clue.

I'm wondering now if maybe the sister was reposting from a mobile device and that's why it posted twice? Or someone else on her feed posted something, deleted a comment so the chain was broken in the reposting? I really hope she joins here because I'd love to help her if I could.

According to the Missing Nelly Nicole Bertolini FB page, there is a lot of frustration with the Fortuna PD. They say they have given LE enough info to make arrests and find Danielle or her remains, but LE isn't acting on it. Fortuna PD is said to have told her father that the only reason they are spending as much time as they have is that he is there. The family has asked that the Down East Emergency Medical Institute SAR group from Maine, which Danielle's mother is a member of, be allowed to help search. Fortuna PD refused. Danielle has ties to Fortuna (bad ones) and they wonder if there is something bigger than Danielle going on. They are desperate for help.

Personally, I give the family a lot of credit for being there and pushing the issue. That's what you have to do in missing adults cases. But there is only so much Fortuna PD can do. People who may know something don't have to talk to them. LE can't search private property without permission or a search warrant. They can't arrest people without a solid reason. SAR groups have to be requested by the PD. I'm sure Humboldt County has SAR teams that know the land better than a group from Maine, but again, they can't go on private property without permission or a warrant. It's very frustrating for the family, and laws designed to protect all citizens also protect criminals. Otherwise, we would live in a police state. But I really feel for Danielle's family, trying to navigate the system and find their loved one in a very dangerous area.

One thing they can do right away is submit DNA and get a NamUs listing started.

I think these links provide some background about Humboldt County that will help WSers understand the environment where Danielle has disappeared. It's a beautiful place. I have a lot of good memories of our 15 years on our land. We have wonderful friends who still live there. But...

Humboldt County has a fairly high rate of unsolved missing persons cases, some of them related to the marijuana culture.

Humboldt County has substantially higher percentage of unsolved missing adults cases with a 17.1 percent unsolved rate, totaling 196 adults over the past 8 years.

Longtime homesteaders complain that the influx of out-of-state growers has changed the character of the county, attracting hustlers looking for a quick buck, who bring transients and hard drugs along with them. But beyond the pot growing, petty crime and panhandling, there are deeper secrets about more sinister deeds, buried in a place known as Murder Mountain.

While finding these articles, I ran across a batch of stories called "Marijuana Fiction" by someone involved in growing in the Garberville area, about 40 minutes south of Fortuna. This is where we used to live, and although we weren't involved in growing, we were, at times, negatively impacted by those around us who did. I think this writer paints a realistic and poignant picture of the dangerous life growers have chosen. Unfortunately, Danielle, according to her FB page, was very publicly part of that subculture.

This linked petition was just posted on the Find Nelly FB page. According to this, someone gave her a ride, her possessions are still in his truck but he's not talking. They want people to call the Fortuna PD and get a search party going. I'm not sure what good this will do, but at least they're trying. I wonder if she knew this person who gave her a ride.
