Circumstances of Disappearance

Angela Pitz Smith has been missing under suspicious circumstances from her Shady Lake Parkway home since November 13, 1989.
Smith's husband, George Smith, filed a missing persons report with the sheriff's office November 16th, when he told police he and his wife argued briefly the night before she disappeared.

The next morning after he made breakfast for two of his three children from a previous marriage, and then sent them to school, Smith said his wife got out of bed and packed two suitcases (which he described as black and gray canvas luggage) and told him she was leaving him.
He said she left in her 1981 Mercedes. Smith told police it was the last time he saw her.

On November 17th, Smith went to New Orleans looking for his wife's car. He said he'd found the automobile in the longterm parking lot at the New Orleans airport, with a parking stub inside showing the car had been there since November 13th, the day she disappeared.

Detectives discovered that Smith's second wife, Sheila L. Smith, 33, was murdered in their home February 12, 1985 in St. Landry Parish. Her body was found by her husband. Smith was later convicted of arranging the murder-for-hire of his second wife.

In 1987 a woman who had been living with Smith in Lafayette, was found dead in her apartment. She was the victim of an apparent suicidal shooting. However, evidence existed that led police to suspect the woman had not attempted suicide, but no charges were filed in the case.

Investigators seized a $ 500,000 life insurance policy taken out by George Smith on Angela Smith.

George Smith, who was convicted of arranging the murder-for-hire of his second wife and suspected in the disappearance of his third wife, died in prison in March of 2000.

Angela Pitz Smith was declared legally dead in February of 1993. Her body has never been found

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - This week marks the 20th anniversary of the disappearance of a Louisiana woman. Authorities believe her husband played some type of role in her death, but her body was never found. She was his third wife. He was convicted of murder-for-hire for the death of his second wife. His first wife died of a gunshot wound, but it was ruled a suicide.

"She said to me, 'I want you to know that if anything ever happens to me, I want you to know that Joey did it,'" said Suzanne Reed, Angela's sister. "Straight, just said it just like that."

"He said she would be pushing up daisies and we would never find her and that's exactly what happened," Floyd said.

Mystery, suspicions shroud Smith cases

Advocate, The (Baton Rouge, LA) (Published as The Advocate (Baton Rouge, La.)) - December 13, 1989

George "Joey" Smith, 40, reported Nov. 16 that Angela, 24, had been missing since Nov. 13, which is when he said his young wife packed her bags and left their $195,000 home in south Baton Rouge.

Smith told sheriff's detectives that he and his wife argued on the night of Nov. 12 and she left him the following morning between 8:15 and 8:30.

Sheriff's detectives considered the circumstances to be suspicious enough to obtain a search warrant for the Smiths' home. During the search, they seized guns, ammunition and a $500,000 life insurance policy on Angie Smith.

They also mentioned in the warrant the strange circumstances under which Joey Smith's second wife, Sheila Lemoine Smith, had been brutally murdered nearly five years earlier in a case that remains open.

When police arrived at the murder scene, they found two rooms that had been ransacked, but no evidence of forced entry into the home. Joey Smith told detectives that about $20,000 worth of jewelry was missing from the home. The $3,600 diamond ring Sheila Smith wore was untouched.

Other inconsistent details nagged detectives who worked the case.

Smith told St. Landry Parish officials that he had taken his two school-age children to their school bus stop about 7:30 a.m. before running some errands. He said he returned to the house between 10 and 10:30 a.m. and found Sheila's body.

On Nov. 17 -- four days after Angie disappeared -- Jackson, Angie's mother and Angie's sister went to the Smiths' home, looking for clues to Angie's disappearance.

"She had three plastic baskets of make-up, and I know for a fact that some of that make-up probably goes back about eight years," Jackson said. "The baskets were in the drawers, but all of the make-up was missing. It looked like someone just dumped all of it out."

On Tuesday, Dec. 5, Joey Smith checked into the Bellemont Hotel, called his psychiatrist and said he was going to kill himself. Police arrived at the hotel and found him semi-conscious in his room. He was taken to the hospital.

Details of Disappearance
Angela was last seen on November 13, 1989 in her home on Shady Lake Parkway in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Her husband, George "Joey" Smith, reported her missing three days later and told police she left home in her 1981 Mercedes on the morning of November 14, after an argument with him the night before. He claimed she took two black and gray canvas suitcases and her 1981 Mercedes.

A week after Angela disappeared, George had all the carpeting in their home professionally cleaned. The carpet was less than four months old and the cleaner found only one stain, which was near the foot of the bed in the master bedroom. It was about six inches in diameter. George told the carpet cleaner that it was a coffee stain, but the cleaner said it came out more easily than coffee stains usually do.

On November 17, George found Angela's car in the long-term parking lot of the airport in New Orleans, Louisiana. There was a parking stub inside showing that the car had been parked there since November 13. Angela has never been heard from again.

Members of Angela's family suspected George in her disappearance from the beginning, claiming he had previously threatened to kill her and hide the body where no one would ever find it. They stated that Angela had told them that if anything happened to her, her husband was probably responsible.

Angela was George's third wife. In 1985, George's second wife, Sheila L. Smith, was found murdered in her home in St. Landry Parrish, Louisiana. In 1995, George was later convicted of her murder-for-hire. The actual killer was Albert Lavalais, a teenager who had worked as a farmhand for George.

In 1987 in Lafayette, Louisiana, a woman who had been living with George was found shot to death in her apartment. Her death appeared to be a suicide, but police found it suspicious. No charges were ever filed in the woman's case.

Angela was declared dead in 1993, and police seized the $500,000 life insurance police George had out on her. George died in prison in 2000; he was never charged in connection with Angela's disappearance, which remains unsolved
