Detectives believe the man's death was suspicious and need to find out who he was.

His body was discovered on the beach near the Watering Hole bar in Perranporth, Cornwall on 2pm on Tuesday, February 25.

He was white, aged 50-70, of thin build, 5ft 5ins to 5ft 7ins, with white receding hair which was bald on top, and a thick white bushy beard.

Police believe he was in the water for no more than 24 hours.

A brown walking shoe, a black and white woolly hat and a rucksack were also both found on or near the body.

A photograph of a small boy was found in a black wallet in the pocket of a dark navy-blue Regatta jacket found nearby on Wednesday, February 26.

There was a date on the back of the photograph of 13 April 1952.

Normally I would be saying that he must have been from abroad if nobody has recognised him by now, but I really don't think he has had all that much publicity.

It has been a really busy news week though, what with the Ukraine/Russia tensions, the Oscars, the arrest at Number 10, the Oscar Pistorius trial and Rebekah Brooks at the phone hacking trial.

Hopefully, the local police will be able to cast a wider net in time and somebody might recognise him. Might be an idea to appeal in France as well though...

I'm sure thats a Cornish (maybe Devon) house and garden - I'll be amazed if the current owners don't recognise it.

If this man's death was the result of foul play in Perranporth, I'll also be amazed if there aren't quite a few people who have heard something about what might have happened by now.

I agree about the garden, but if he was a current local I find it hard to believe that nobody has given his name yet.

I think the boy in the photo is probably the UID as a child. The UID is certainly the right age to be that child. If the photo was indeed taken in Cornwall, then perhaps the UID was revisiting his past. Maybe he was adopted and this photo was of him pre-adoption?

The clothing/belongings make it look like he was travelling.
 
The Watering Hole Bar, near where the body was located, is on the beach and luckily, has a webcam. Unluckily, glass got scratched in the recent storms and it's blurry. As it is night there now nothing is visible at all - but I wonder if anyone happened to spot anything one night?

It might be helpful if the bar could put up a flyer for this man.

Yes, travelling or walking or even working?

I'm guessing with the recent weather there won't have been that many tourists in Perranporth, so a stranger in a bar should have been remembered. If he was revisiting his past and talked about it, I'd imagine that would be recollected too - "Oh you must have been so and so's boy, she lived in the cottage down the lane where whatsisname lives now..." etc.

I'm wondering if he washed in from somewhere else, but have no idea where anything washes into Perranporth beach, or how long it might have taken for a body to travel from, say, Newquay. I'm sure the locals will know though.
 
Looking at the map, it's hard to see where else he might have gone in the water, without anyone recalling him being around. They are all very small places either side of Perranporth, except Newquay.

Could he have gone in the water there, and got all the way to Perranporth beach in 24 hrs?

Unlikely, I think.

ETA: It's about nine miles away.

Those keys are not for modern, insulated front and back doors. Old fashioned keys for old wooden doors - in fact, neither look like front door keys at all, unless a third one is hidden at the back.
 
The keys have been claimed by the owner (they don't belong to the UID), thus the image has been removed in the LE's Flickr images :)

R.I.P Alan glad they managed to I.D him. It is strange a photo of him as a boy was on his remains but it was the photo that got family members to call police and I.d him.

I am sure the police will be investigating who would benefit from his estate after death or if he had any debts or enemies.

CCTV footage from Wadebridge town centre shows Mr Jeal using a Barclays cash machine just before 12pm on February 24, the day before his corpse was found.

Police are treating the death as suspicious and the investigation is now focusing on the 64 year-olds last movements.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Thorne, senior investigating officer, said: “Firstly, our thoughts are with Alan’s family and friends at this upsetting time and we will do everything we can to support them".
