The baby whose parents are accused of abusing him since birth was not breathing when he arrived at the hospital in December.

Authorities say a Fruitport Township couple has been abusing their baby since he was born.

Their many Facebooks with photos of the parents and of precious little Oryn

A couple of real winners, right here in my own backyard. They almost killed their own tiny little baby. Dad admits to "playing rough" with the little guy while mom just watched. Oh, and they didn't feed him.

Mom is looking at a lighter sentence. Because she didn't actually bash little Oryn into the furniture. She just watched, and neglected to feed him. Whatever. They sicken me.

I don't think I can change the title. I think a mod has to do it. But thanks!

terrible story...
I know many won't agree with me but i'm sorry these two look developmentally delayed and should not have been allowed to take that helpless infant home after birth.

I do disagree, I think they look like perfectly typical young parents.
I see a few piercings and maybe some tattoos, typical young people.
I see no indication of developmental disability.

However, I have an 11 year old daughter with Down syndrome.
She knows how to feed, change and be gentle with a baby. :twocents:

Muskegon County’s chief district judge has kicked the new Muskegon County Office of Public Defender off the high-profile felony case of Randee Adrianne Bastian, mother of a baby boy who nearly died of brain and spine injuries.

Chief 60th District Judge Maria Ladas Hoopes ruled that the office has a conflict of interest because it also represents the baby – the alleged victim of severe child abuse by his parents -- in a child neglect/abuse case in Family Court.

Randee and Kevin Bastian last week voluntarily agreed to termination of their parental rights in Family Court, but only conditionally while the criminal cases are pending, Maat said in court. If either parent should be acquitted or have the criminal case dropped, he or she could petition to have parental rights restored.

Five months old... head injuries... Poor little guy. But he's safe now.

At that age, he's likely to make a full recovery, too. His brain is still growing and repairing itself. Things are looking up now that he's got good food, medical care, and TLC. Even if he ends up with some issues--he's safe now. There's no way they'll let those "parents" have him back. He's young enough, I bet he gets adopted and grows up in a proper loving home. He deserves no less.

And his so-called parents deserve to spend the rest of their pitiful lives in prison, where they can never touch another child again.

Yeah; developmental disability doesn't mean a person should lose their baby. It means that if they need help with raising the baby, they should get it. Disabled mothers have had their children taken from them on the presumption that they won't be competent parents--when they very much wanted the child, and were totally willing to learn or to get the help they needed, and in some cases when they were totally competent to take care of the child.

I think what we ought to do when a disabled parent has a baby is to make sure they get whatever help they need, whether that's a live-in caretaker or just adapted baby equipment. All you need to be a good parent is to love the baby, to be gentle, to know when to ask for help.

So he'll be in prison for at least 3 1/2 more years, hopefully longer. Glad to hear the little baby is doing well.

Muskegon County 14th Circuit Judge Timothy G. Hicks on Monday, March 23, sentenced Kevin Lee Bastian to between 3 ½ and 21 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections for first-degree child abuse. Bastian, 26, received credit for 388 days he had already spent in the Muskegon County Jail.

[...]

According to the Muskegon County Prosecutor's Office, the child's current caretaker reports he has made a full recovery, but doctors warn that impairments may not be discovered until later in life. The child, now about 18 months old, is being well cared for under the supervision of Muskegon County Family Court and the Department of Human Services, according to the prosecutor's office.
