Two year old Sophie Jones who was found dead Tuesday, is thought to have been given the heroin substitute methadone, 'to keep her quiet'. She died of a cardiac arrest.

A 29 yr old woman and a 41 yr old man are being questioned. Police have asked for an extension to keep them in custody longer.

Little Sophie has two siblings.

That is about the saddest thing I've ever heard of. Sure in the 40s and 50s people did swab the gums of little ones when teething but that was so long ago before science was on it's way....medical science any ways...it's very sad to think anyone would do this, to keep a child quiet..well CA resorted to duct tape..so anything is possible IMO.
 
They believe it is present in Sophie's cup and it is being forensically tested.

Sophie died in hospital, not at home, so at least someone tried to get help for her. Although, as police haven't said she 100 per cent was given the drug, it may be that nobody told the hospital what was wrong with her.
 
Sophie's toxicology tests have shown she ingested methadone. This article says police are checking her baby bottle, not cup (big difference, imo). The two adults are being held on suspicion of manslaughter.

Sophie even looks a little out of it in this photo, I think.....

This is tragic case poor little Sophie children should never be around methadone. This has happened many times in the UK before.

Ugh. It's the parents.

Police are appealing for the return of a container of methadone that they believe was removed from the house, shortly before paramedics arrived. They think it may have been handed to a friend, or left in the street(!!).

Anyone with any information is urged to call police on 101.

The offence seems to carry a max sentence of 14 years (so 7 with parole, I guess?). I think this offence was introduced in 2004 to prevent situations that had happened before, where a child died in a home and parents blamed each other for causing the death, and so both walked free.

The parents appeared in court this morning. They were both remanded in custody until March 27th when they are due to appear in Preston Crown Court.

Their lawyers made it clear they intend to plead not guilty to the charges.

Not at the link, but on the radio I heard the mother sobbed throughout the hearing, and the Daily Mail's reported the parents were allowed - in a very exceptional case and after repeated requests - to go and view their little girl's body at the morgue.

Barry Jones, 42, was found guilty of manslaughter and child cruelty, at Preston Crown Court in November. Michelle King, 30, her mother, admitted manslaughter at an earlier hearing.

The court heard the pair put their drug use above the health and safety of Sophie, with the child exposed to both heroin and cocaine at their Jameson Street home. Police said the methadone was left in a place where the toddler had "easy access to it", with a large number of children's fruit juice bottles containing traces of the drug also found in a bin. Simon Medland QC, prosecuting, said it had been stored in a beaker decorated with Tom and Jerry characters and identical to one the child used regularly.
