Malaysia Airlines says it has lost contact with a plane travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, with 239 people on board.

The airline said in a statement that flight MH370 disappeared at 02:40 local time on Saturday (18:40 GMT on Friday).

The hunt for debris was suspended earlier due to bad weather as huge seas slammed the search area.

At midday today the sea state was estimated at between six and seven on the World Meteorological Organisation chart and that means waves of between four and nine metres.

Such conditions make finding or retrieving any debris virtually impossible and they increase the risk of wreckage sinking under the weight of the waves

This morning, AMSA stated that search operations were “expected to resume tomorrow, if weather conditions permit”, but if conditions continue to deteriorate it could be several days before the search is resumed.

The Wall Street Journal said U.S. aviation investigators and national security officials believed the plane flew for a total of five hours, based on data automatically downloaded and sent to the ground from the Boeing 777's Rolls-Royce engines as part of a standard monitoring programme. ()

Malaysian Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said on Thursday that the reports were not true.

bbm This is the only reason that they knew where that plane was. Malay denied it to be true. Rolls-Royce it seems stepped back and has stayed silence since then.

THE search and recovery operation for the missing Malaysia Airlines aircraft in the southern Indian Ocean will resume tomorrow.

“A visual search will resume tomorrow when the weather is expected to improve after gale force winds and heavy swells resulted in the suspension of the search operation on Tuesday,” AMSA said tonight.

As many as 12 aircraft are expected to be involved in the search tomorrow, including seven military aircraft and five civil aircraft.

I was watching the news last night, and I was brought to tears. This poor Chinese lady lost her ENTIRE family on this flight. She dropped to her knees and cried. I start crying just thinking about it.
My heart goes out to all the passengers and all their friends and relatives.

The CNN talking head's opinion is ludicrous.

By all accounts, Malaysia Airlines has an excellent safety record (Business Week today) (BBM):

According to data up to the middle of last decade, Malaysia’s flag carrier had suffered two fatal crashes in 1.8 million flights—an accident rate better than Air France, KLM, or Swissair at the time.

The broader assertion that developing countries cannot run safe airlines is false (BBM):

In the middle of the last decade, the fatal crash rate for Kenya Airways was about three in 1 million...That’s higher than that of U.S. carriers such as American Airlines (0.6 fatal crashes per 1 million flights) or United (0.5 per million)—but it still suggests flying is safe, and that the gap between poor and rich countries is small.

Yes, the search is difficult and requires international aid and cooperation. And from this tragedy, we can learn many important safety lessons for the future. "Poorer countries like Malaysia shouldn't run airlines" isn't one of them.
 
Any Aussies on-thread should watch Air Crash Investigations tonight (Ch 7-Two). The episode right now is about a large commercial plane (a brand new 767) that gradually lost all its power .. transponders, engines, most everything .. and is gliding for many, many kms.

Not saying this is what happened to MH370, but the catastrophic events that can happen on a plane boggle the mind .. and are very scary. :eek:

''The government has decided to waive visa fees for any relatives wishing to come to Australia.''

But in Malaysia, airline executives said relatives would not be granted visas for Australia until any debris found in the Indian Ocean was confirmed to be from the plane. Despite sightings of suspicious objects on satellite images, so far nothing has been recovered.

A concert to mark Malaysia`s Formula One Grand Prix weekend which was set to feature US star Christina Aguilera has been cancelled. State oil company Petronas, which sponsors the Mercedes F1 racing team and the annual concert, said it called off the show as "a sign of respect to the families and next-of-kin of the crew and passengers of flight MH370". The concert was to be held Friday and Saturday at the Kuala Lumpur Twin Towers and feature Aguilera, Korean star Rain and R&B musician Craig Davis. Formula One organisers were to meet later Tuesday to discuss a possible tribute to victims at this weekend`s event.

Malaysia will also host a EurAsia Cup golf tournament and the prestigious Laureus sports awards this week. Laureaus World Sports Academy, which will honour last year`s top sports figures Wednesday, said it would have a reduced programme because of the disaster. Academy chairman Edwin Moses said a football friendly between past greats would be dedicated to those hit by the disaster.

That is interesting, i wonder if something the same happened here. My fear is they were alive during most of this and died on impact. What an incredibly lonely and awful time it would have been

I think if they were àlive someone would have gotten in the cockpit and at least tried to signal mayday. I think at the very least the flight attendants would know how to do that.
