Breaking news

Malaysia Airlines says it has lost contact with a plane travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, with 239 people on board.

The airline said in a statement that flight MH370 disappeared at 02:40 local time on Saturday (18:40 GMT on Friday).

I'm praying the plane is found and people on the plane survive.

The moderators have been wading in a pool of alerts this morning - and most are coming from this forum. :yow: I wanted to review some of the issues that happened yesterday because if the issues continue, some of our members are going to find themselves on the outside looking in. :(

- Discuss the topic and not each other. If you have a problem with a fellow poster, alert via the little red triangle in the upper corner of the post and the mods will review privately

- Limit the one liners. A little humor while waiting is okay, but when it goes on and on then it falls into being "off topic" which is a forum violation. And make sure you're not poking fun at this tragedy. Not funny.

The hunt for debris was suspended earlier due to bad weather as huge seas slammed the search area.

At midday today the sea state was estimated at between six and seven on the World Meteorological Organisation chart and that means waves of between four and nine metres.

Such conditions make finding or retrieving any debris virtually impossible and they increase the risk of wreckage sinking under the weight of the waves

This morning, AMSA stated that search operations were “expected to resume tomorrow, if weather conditions permit”, but if conditions continue to deteriorate it could be several days before the search is resumed.

Inmarsat interrogated MH370's pings to plot final route

http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/03/24/us-malaysia-airlines-inmarsat-pings-idUSBREA2N1C820140324

The Wall Street Journal said U.S. aviation investigators and national security officials believed the plane flew for a total of five hours, based on data automatically downloaded and sent to the ground from the Boeing 777's Rolls-Royce engines as part of a standard monitoring programme. ()

Malaysian Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said on Thursday that the reports were not true.

bbm This is the only reason that they knew where that plane was. Malay denied it to be true. Rolls-Royce it seems stepped back and has stayed silence since then.

The report I posted up there has just been updated...

THE search and recovery operation for the missing Malaysia Airlines aircraft in the southern Indian Ocean will resume tomorrow.

“A visual search will resume tomorrow when the weather is expected to improve after gale force winds and heavy swells resulted in the suspension of the search operation on Tuesday,” AMSA said tonight.

As many as 12 aircraft are expected to be involved in the search tomorrow, including seven military aircraft and five civil aircraft.

Malaysian Minister: search for #MH370 in northern corridor called off, now concentrating on 469,407sq miles of south of southern corridor

I was watching the news last night, and I was brought to tears. This poor Chinese lady lost her ENTIRE family on this flight. She dropped to her knees and cried. I start crying just thinking about it.
My heart goes out to all the passengers and all their friends and relatives.

I just heard this from a TH on CNN and I typed it as quickly as I could to paraphrase the content, which IMO has merit

as the economies of emerging countries expand, they are able to enter areas of commerce in which they lack the necessary experience and expertise. they do not have anything near a proven history of managing and supporting all of the facets of modern aviation, especially in terms of implementing safeguards and conducting investigations when things go wrong. just because they have the money to purchase a plane doesn't mean that they are qualified to market jet travel. human lives are at stake and the current search has shown how incredibly expensive and complicated it is to mount investigation and search efforts

how "someone" would decide who can enter the game and who can't, I dunno, that's probably a whole can of political worms. but definitely food for thought

The CNN talking head's opinion is ludicrous.

By all accounts, Malaysia Airlines has an excellent safety record (Business Week today) (BBM):

According to data up to the middle of last decade, Malaysia’s flag carrier had suffered two fatal crashes in 1.8 million flights—an accident rate better than Air France, KLM, or Swissair at the time.

The broader assertion that developing countries cannot run safe airlines is false (BBM):

In the middle of the last decade, the fatal crash rate for Kenya Airways was about three in 1 million...That’s higher than that of U.S. carriers such as American Airlines (0.6 fatal crashes per 1 million flights) or United (0.5 per million)—but it still suggests flying is safe, and that the gap between poor and rich countries is small.

Yes, the search is difficult and requires international aid and cooperation. And from this tragedy, we can learn many important safety lessons for the future. "Poorer countries like Malaysia shouldn't run airlines" isn't one of them.

Any Aussies on-thread should watch Air Crash Investigations tonight (Ch 7-Two). The episode right now is about a large commercial plane (a brand new 767) that gradually lost all its power .. transponders, engines, most everything .. and is gliding for many, many kms.

Not saying this is what happened to MH370, but the catastrophic events that can happen on a plane boggle the mind .. and are very scary.

Both Malaysia Airlines Chairman and the CEO take the microphone on MH370

http://www.eturbonews.com/43995/not-edited-both-malaysia-airlines-chairman-and-ceo-take-micropho

This is times of extraordinary emotions, so we understand how the families feel. On Tuesday, March 25, the Malaysia Airline Chairman and CEO take the microphone. Their statement made after the Malaysian prime minister's statement is not edited.

snipped:

In the meantime, Malaysia Airlines’ overwhelming focus will be the same as it has been from the outset – to provide the families with a comprehensive support programme. Through a network of over 700 dedicated caregivers, the loved ones of those on board have been provided with two dedicated caregivers for each family, providing care, support and counsel. We are now supporting over 900 people under this programme and in the last 72 hours, we have trained an additional 40 caregivers to ensure the families have access to round-the-clock support.

In addition, hotel accommodation for up to five family members per passenger, transportation, meals and others expenses have been provided since 8th March and that will continue.

Malaysia Airlines has already provided initial financial assistance of USD 5,000 per passenger to the next of kin. We recognize that financial support is not the only consideration. But the prolonged search is naturally placing financial strain on the relatives. We are therefore preparing to offer additional payments as the search continues.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Tony Abbott ... said relatives of the plane's 239 passengers and crew would likely want to come to Australia.''I want them all to know … that they will be in the arms of a decent country,'' he said. ''The government has decided to waive visa fees for any relatives wishing to come to Australia.''

But in Malaysia, airline executives said relatives would not be granted visas for Australia until any debris found in the Indian Ocean was confirmed to be from the plane. Despite sightings of suspicious objects on satellite images, so far nothing has been recovered.

A concert to mark Malaysia`s Formula One Grand Prix weekend which was set to feature US star Christina Aguilera has been cancelled. State oil company Petronas, which sponsors the Mercedes F1 racing team and the annual concert, said it called off the show as "a sign of respect to the families and next-of-kin of the crew and passengers of flight MH370". The concert was to be held Friday and Saturday at the Kuala Lumpur Twin Towers and feature Aguilera, Korean star Rain and R&B musician Craig Davis. Formula One organisers were to meet later Tuesday to discuss a possible tribute to victims at this weekend`s event.

Malaysia will also host a EurAsia Cup golf tournament and the prestigious Laureus sports awards this week. Laureaus World Sports Academy, which will honour last year`s top sports figures Wednesday, said it would have a reduced programme because of the disaster. Academy chairman Edwin Moses said a football friendly between past greats would be dedicated to those hit by the disaster.

That is interesting, i wonder if something the same happened here. My fear is they were alive during most of this and died on impact. What an incredibly lonely and awful time it would have been

The New Straits Times’ darkened front page showed an aircraft above the words “Goodnight, MH370” — a reference to the last message from the cockpit, “All right, good night”

On social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook, many Malaysians turned their profile backgrounds black or displayed a plane icon in tribute to the victims.

I think if they were àlive someone would have gotten in the cockpit and at least tried to signal mayday. I think at the very least the flight attendants would know how to do that.
