"Police say “brazen” gunfire erupted on the edge of Ryerson University’s campus at about 2:20 a.m. on Friday and continued for a kilometre on city streets as Mr. Parris’s car was chased by a light-coloured SUV before crashing into a pole. Mr. Parris, 25, was found slumped in the car with several bullet wounds. His two passengers, a young woman and man, received non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators have no suspects, but say Mr. Parris, who came to Toronto from the North Preston area near Halifax, was known to police and lived a high-risk, criminal lifestyle.

“This attack, I’ll call it, was not random. It certainly was targeted in my view,” Detective Sergeant Steve Ryan told reporters".

Toronto’s Shmar Parris, 25, was behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Malibu near Mutual and Gould Sts. around 2:20 a.m. when an unknown number of suspects in a light-coloured SUV began shooting at him and his two passengers.

Parris, who was known to police and lived a high-risk criminal lifestyle, fled the scene with those in the SUV giving chase continuing to shoot, homicide Det. Steve Ryan said.

The chase ended with Parris slamming headlong into a hydro pole and those in the SUV stopping to fire more rounds into the Malibu before speeding south on Parliament St.

The SUV was last seen hurtling westbound on the Gardiner Expwy., around Bathurst St., moving erratically and at one point brushing up against the highway’s guardrails, Ryan said.

Witness account of the shooting

A Ryerson University student who lives nearby told CP24 that she heard approximately five shots, and looked outside to see vehicles fleeing the scene. The cars headed north on Mutual Street then turned east on Carlton Street, she said.

"It sounded kind of like fireworks," the woman said of the initial gunshots. "That really got my attention and then I heard (tires) squealing."

The student, who wished to remain anonymous, said she heard about three more shots after the vehicles turned onto Carlton

HUNTER: Double murder and Brinks guard slaying top April cold cases | Canada.Com
''Shmar Parris lived what cops call a “high-risk criminal lifestyle.”
For the 25-year-old — whose rap handle was Murda Marz — the finale came on April 4, 2014 around 2:20 a.m. when Parris was targeted for death while driving his Chevrolet Malibu near Mutual and Gould Sts.

When Parris tried to make a run for it, cops say the triggermen in a light-coloured Escalade SUV continued the chase until the Malibu slammed into a hydro pole. His killers then emerged from the SUV and squeezed off more rounds before fleeing south on Parliament St.

“(Parris) was known to police, and this attack … was not random by (any) means. It certainly was targeted,” a detective said at the time, adding the murder was gang-related.''
Parris was pronounced dead as he slumped over in the driver’s seat. A male and female passenger suffered minor wounds.''
The late rapper is just one of 30 unsolved homicides listed by the Toronto Police Service for the month of April. The oldest of these cases dates to 1959.
“All of these homicides involved egregious violence. We are looking to bring the offenders to justice,” cold-case chief Det. Sgt. Steve Smith told the Toronto Sun. “If anyone in the community can assist, please contact us any way they feel comfortable.”
