Australia warned its ice problem is reaching pandemic proportions and is threatening entire communities as Australian Crime Commission releases landmark report

28th April,2014

THE Australian Crime Commission have warned the nation the size of the ice problem is reaching pandemic proportions.

Victoria Police deputy commissioner Graham Ashton has an equally chilling warning to all parents in country Victoria about the ice plague.

“It is clear that an entire generation of rural youth is at risk, threatening the future prosperity of those communities,” he told the Herald Sun.

Deputy Commissioner Ashton revealed bikie gangs and overseas criminal syndicates were taking advantage of the highly addictive aspect of ice “to actively hook thousands of young Victorians”.

The ACC will on Tuesday use a Melbourne press conference to release a report on illicit drug use in Australia which calls for a broader approach than currently exists to crack down on the ice pandemic — saying it is not just a law enforcement issue.

ICE is so scary... I hate that people show such a blatant disregard to the health and wellbeing of others just so that they can get rich... What kind of sick messed up people are they??

Where there is prohibition there will be gangsters. Continued "war on drugs" government policy is what makes me angry. :banghead:

Silly me. I thought this was about the frozen water variety such as we have in great heaps in these parts. Ice? In Australia??! How can this be, me thought??

DRUG DENS IN YOUR BACKYARD: How to spot a suburban lab

Landlords pay the price of druggie tenants

May 02, 2014 5:58PM

IT’S every property owner’s worst nightmare.

Just this week almost 100 kilograms of amphetamine-type substances, manufacturing equipment and $2.5 million in cash were found in eight search warrants executed across Perth, Sydney and the Gold Coast.

A significant portion of this was found in homes in Queensland and Sydney, with one taking two days to complete because of the volume of drugs, equipment and chemicals at the house.

Terri Scheer Insurance executive manager Carolyn Parrella said tenants involved in cultivating illegal drugs, such as cannabis, methamphetamine and ecstasy go to great lengths to hide their activities. But there are some crucial signs.

Here are her top tips if you’re worried your home is being used as a drug lab:

Media Release: Drugs, gun and $2.5 million cash seized in Australia-wide operation

Release Date: Thursday, May 01 2014, 06:26 AM

An Australian Federal Police (AFP) investigation has disrupted a criminal syndicate trafficking narcotics across the country, seizing almost 100 kilograms of amphetamine-type substances and various precursor chemicals, drug manufacturing equipment and approximately $2.5 million in cash.

A total of 50 kilograms of methamphetamine, 15 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine tablets, 20 kilograms of ephedrine, 10 kilograms of a powder suspected to be pseudoephedrine, and various precursor chemicals were seized during eight search warrants in Perth, Sydney and the Gold Coast.

"Data from a number of sources indicate rates of methamphetamine use are higher among rural and remote areas of Australia compared to regional areas and major cities. For example, the 2016 National Drug Strategy Household Survey found rates of methamphetamine use were twice as high among people living in remote or very remote areas compared to rates among those living in major cities or regional areas. Young people aged 18–24 years old living in rural areas were also more likely to report recent ice use than their city or regional counterparts."

"It is difficult to determine whether methamphetamine use (including ice use) in Australia has increased. Data from the 2016 National Drug Strategy Household Survey suggest that overall rates of methamphetamine (including ice) use in the general population have remained stable or declined over the past 5 years. However, data from this survey and from hospital records, indicate that rates of regular and dependent methamphetamine use have increased over that time. Additionally, the number of regular users who report using crystal methamphetamine (ice) as their main form of methamphetamine has increased from 22 to 57% between 2010 and 2016, while reports of speed use have decreased (from 50 to 20%). The number of individuals reporting smoking as the main route of administration has also increased (from 19 to 40%). Among injecting drug users there has been a 6% increase in crystal methamphetamine (ice) use, and a 5% decrease in speed use, from 2014 to 2015. Taken together these data suggest that, among methamphetamine users, ice is becoming a more popular form of the drug."
