"Evan GARBER

Evan Garber was enjoying a meal at one of his favourite restaurants. He could have waited for the robbery to be over. He could have done nothing.

However, that wasn’t possible for this Good Samaritan. This was not the first robbery where he had intervened, but sadly, it would be the last.

It was 1:30 in the morning on April 28, 2006, and Evan was sitting at his usual table in the restaurant at 3163 Main St, where he ate at least three times a week. There were several staff and 20 patrons inside when a man walked in with a handgun and confronted a staff member before taking cash from the register. When the robber tried to leave, Evan confronted him and they began to struggle. Another restaurant patron also got involved in an attempt to overtake the robber, and shots were fired.

Evan was shot and died in the restaurant. The second patron was critically injured. Four others were injured in the chaotic scene.

Evan, aged 59, had been a regular customer at the restaurant for years. Staff described him as a “really nice guy” who favoured oysters and beef brisket. Evan’s family say he was a quiet, peaceful man who lived alone and often worked late, with a brilliant mind and a wonderful gift for writing. According to his pastor, Evan was a gentle, soft-spoken man, who was faithfully involved with the church. He was a widower, who had also lost his son five years previous.

Three years after his death, Evan’s sister Marilyn Rivers-Bowerman made an emotional plea for someone to come forward with information. She described her brother as a hero. “We could expect Evan to stand up for what he believed and it was his belief in God and his commitment to social justice that gave him the strength to defend others.”
"
“Evan stood up for others,” said Rivers-Bowerman. “Isn’t there someone who will stand up for him?

"Garber, 59, was a regular customer at the Kwong Chow Congee and Noodle House, 3163 Main St., and was there at 1:30 a.m. April 28, 2006, when a white male walked in and robbed the cash register, Det. Ron Symes said Friday.

Garber confronted the robber; he was shot and killed in a struggle, and another customer was seriously wounded.

The suspect ran out of the restaurant and may have got into a dark blue, early 1990s, four-door Oldsmobile or Chevrolet.

It was the second time Garber had intervened in a robbery, Symes said. In an earlier incident, he was in a store when a robber entered wearing a bag over his head.

Garber removed the bag, allowing the robber to be videoed by surveillance cameras, leading to his arrest."

Before we even get into the crime itself , every member here

Speaking as a former law enforcement officer, and someone who teaches self protection

NEVER PLAY HERO, IN AN ARMED ROBBERY EVER!

I don't care if you are armed yourself.. keep your weapon hidden, and be a good witness.

Unless your life is in danger, I don't care if you're CIA /SAS/HRT/ SWAT /Special forces or a Friggin highly decorated NAVY SEAL you have no reason to EVER engage an armed suspect, in a robbery if you're life isn't in danger whether you're armed or not .

Nothing other than you or youre loved ones are worth your life. If its property or money they want.. "hey man here have a good vacation"

1 person died, another was in critical condition, because they decided to engage a man who was armed.

Off the soapbox (sorry)
Was there any security video of the incident?, and was s composite circulated,?

Better description of suspect and vehicle:

"A car was seen leaving the area at the time and may be related to the incident. Investigators are looking for an older, 1989-1992 dark blue, four-door sedan, possibly a Chevrolet or Oldsmobile. Witnesses say the robber was white, mid to late 20s, 6' tall, 170 to 180 lbs. and he was wearing a light-coloured baseball cap, a loose shirt, possibly a track jacket, a t-shirt and long pants."

Here is a nice guy just trying to do what he thinks is right. Obviously though, he approached an armed suspect who was trying to flee the scene. Never a good idea. Money isn't worth a life. However, Evan was just trying to do what he thought was right, but it got him killed. There were no surveillance cameras in the establishment. It is mentioned that at one point they thought this was related to other armed robberies in the area.

12 years and still no justice. Obviously someone has information. Hopefully one day it comes to light. Someone ALWAYS knows .....
