Man Enters Not Guilty Pleas In Troopers’ Deaths

Kangas' attorney, assistant public defender Jesse Mickels, is seeking a summer trial and wants proceedings moved from Fairbanks to Nenana, which is the closest district courthouse to the village of Tanana.
He also is seeking a reduction in the $4 million bail set for his client.

Mickels also wants Judge Bethany Harbison to revise a court order banning Kangas from speaking with his mother, who is a witness in the case.

In court, Arvin Kangas pleaded “Guilty” to a consolidated charge of Assault IV, and in exchange, received a sentence of 30 days in jail. Although Kangas has been in jail since May, he will remain in custody on four counts of Evidence Tampering and four counts of Hindering Prosecution. The trial date on those charges is set for mid-April...

On April 30, Tanana’s VPSO, Mark Haglin was called to a residence in the community because of a dispute over a couch. It was alleged that Kangas had sold the couch to a resident there and had failed to get paid for it and so threatened to remove the piece of furniture...

When going to the Kangas home later, Kangas was on the porch with a firearm. According to records, Kangas pointed the firearm in a threatening manner while looking at Haglin. Haglin would report that encounter to troopers in Fairbanks, and the next day, Troopers Johnson and Rich would respond. Johnson and Rich were shot and killed when attempting to arrest Kangas on the charges. They were shot by Arvin Kangas' son, Nathaniel Kangas.

Prospective jurors gathered Monday morning in Superior Court Judge Paul Lyle’s courtroom in Fairbanks and were asked if they had any reasons they should not serve on the jury. (...)

Jury selection will resume today from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and Lyle said he hoped to question six jurors every hour. The final jury will consist of 12 jurors and two alternates.

The trial is expected to last three to four weeks.

District Attorney Greggory Olson summarized the events of that day and told the jury they should find Nathanial Kangas guilty of two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree murder, one count of third-degree assault and four counts of tampering with physical evidence.

An attorney for the 22-year-old man accused of killing two Alaska State Troopers in Tanana two years ago said there is no dispute that Nathanial Kangas shot Alaska State Troopers Sgt. Patrick "Scott" Johnson and trooper Gabriel Rich as they tried to arrest Arvin Kangas, Nathanial's father.

Instead, defense attorney Gregory Parvin argued in opening statements in a Fairbanks courtroom Monday that the younger Kangas acted impulsively and without forethought, firing seven shots in two seconds, and for that reason he is not guilty of first-degree murder.

Day 2 of the Nathanial Kangas murder trail included testimony from Alaska State Troopers who investigated the May 2014 shooting deaths of two of their comrades in the village of Tanana.

The jury also listened to audio from recorders worn by Trooper Rich and Sergeant Johnson during the May 2014 incident.

Rich and Johnson are heard being professional and courteous in trying to take an extremely uncooperative Arvin Kangas into custody.

Kangas repeatedly denies doing anything wrong, and questions the Trooper’s authority.

After shots are fired by Nathaniel Kangas, he’s heard crying and apologizing.

Arvin Kangas is later heard tampering with the crime scene.

The defense rested its case Wednesday in the trial of a Tanana man charged with fatally shooting two Alaska State Troopers in 2014 after the defendant declined to testify on his own behalf.

Defense Attorney Greg Parvin had expressed surprise that District Attorney Greggory Olson finished his case “a full day ahead of schedule” before his client, Nathanial Kangas, informed the judge of his plans not to testify.

Closing arguments will be presented tomorrow (Friday).

A Fairbanks jury on Monday found Nathanial Kangas guilty of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of Alaska state trooper Sgt. Patrick "Scott" Johnson and trooper Gabe Rich.

In addition to the murder verdict, the jury found Kangas guilty of third-degree assault on a Tanana village public safety officer and not guilty of tampering with physical evidence, charges related to moving the weapons of the officers. It found him guilty of tampering with evidence for moving marijuana plants.

The jury also found a "special verdict" that both Johnson and Rich were clearly identifiable peace officers engaged in the performance of their jobs. That means each murder count comes with a mandatory 99-year sentence, according to District Attorney Gregg Olson, who said that the nature of the case took a toll.

The judge set a hearing for Friday to schedule sentencing, possibly in August.
