Police: Death of Winooski toddler was homicide
Posted: May 09, 2014 12:14 PM CST Updated: May 09, 2014 6:34 PM CST
By Shelby CashmanWINOOSKI, Vt. - Those who knew 15-month-old Peighton Geraw say he was a dream baby. Staff members at the day care where he used to spend time say he was always smiling and happy.

But his life was tragically cut short. On the afternoon of April 4, emergency services responded to a home on Malletts Bay Avenue in Winooski after receiving reports that a baby had stopped breathing. The child was then transported to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington and pronounced dead shortly after.

And now police say that Peighton Geraw was killed.
"The death certificate which was issued by the medical examiner [Thursday] listed the manner of death as a homicide and the cause as trauma to the head and neck," said Sgt. Mike Warren of the Chittenden Unit for Special Investigations.

Police: Death of Winooski toddler was homicide

On April 4, emergency services responded to a report of 15 month baby boy Peighton Geraw that stopped breathing at an address on Mallets Bay Avenue in Winooski. The child was brought to Fletcher Allen where he was pronounced dead.

The Chittenden Unit for Special Investigations were contacted by the Winooski Police Department and were notified of the death. An investigation into the baby's death was started immediately.

The comments below the above article are interesting, some from those who know the mother. I look for her or her current boyfriend getting charged with his murder. Such a cute little punkin'! How does a mother harm her own adorable little boy...I just don't get it. :banghead:

This is sickening. If couples want to beat up each other, have at it. But for pity's sake, leave the poor children out of it!

WINOOSKI, Vt. - Startling new details around the moments that led up to the death of a baby boy. The baby died one hour after a social worker left the home. Now, there are concerns around what went wrong and whether the case was handled appropriately.
After the baby's death, police interviewed Tyler Chicoine, the boyfriend of the child's mother. Investigators noticed he was bruised under his left eye and on his back. Police say he gave conflicting stories around what happened moments before the 911 call. The police say he later admitted to a physical altercation with LaForce. Both Chicoine and LaForce are now in custody for unrelated parole violations.

Winooski mom pleads not guilty to murdering son
Updated: May 30, 2014 5:00 PM EDT

BURLINGTON, Vt. -
Nytosha Laforce plead not guilty to second degree murder for the death or her 15-month-old son, Peighton Geraw and court documents reveal that the child’s short life was full of tragic circumstances.

Geraw was pronounced dead on the afternoon of April 4, 2014.

And police say his mother, Nytosha Laforce, killed him.

The whole case has promoted an investigation into the Department for Children and Families policies after new details surrounding Peighton's death came to light.

Court papers reveal he was born opiate addicted. DCF had taken custody of him at least once after Laforce violated parole and fled the state. And the fatal injuries occurred just hours before a DCF worker arrived at the home.

Documents also show that Laforce told the DCF worker during the visit that Peighton was sleeping and she did not want to wake him up.

Therefore, the DCF worker never held the child and only observed bruises on the child’s neck. Documents say the worker admitted not knowing whether the child was actually alive at the time of his visit.

Reporter Shelby Cashman: And it's unclear whether or not Peighton was still alive when the DCF worker was there?

Warren: That is unclear.

The DCF didn't even check to make sure the child was alive, let alone okay?

Unbelievable. :disgusted:

Salem

So the DCF caseworker sees the bruises on this baby's neck and leaves him there in the home anyway? I certainly hope the caseworker is looking for a new job, in a new profession.

Rest in peace sweet baby boy.

When Laforce and Chicoine took Peighton to the doctor 2 days before his death because he was ill and had stopped walking, doctors failed to notice that he had a broken leg :( They did report bruises on his neck to DCF, who visited two days later.

Laforce told them Peighton was sleeping and she didn't want to disturb him, but showed them his bruises from a distance. The dcf worker said he looked pale and in retrospect can't say if Peighton was alive or dead at that point.

October 2016:

Winooski woman takes plea deal in baby's killing

http://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/story/news/2016/10/07/winooski-woman-baby-death/91732196/

The Winooski woman accused of fatally beating her 14-month-old son just before a state social worker made a home visit in 2014 accepted a plea deal on reduced charges Friday, weeks before her trial was scheduled to begin.

Nytosha LaForce, 30, pleaded no contest to manslaughter and cruelty to a child in connection with the killing of Peighton Geraw on April 4, 2014. She previously pleaded not guilty to a charge of second-degree murder.

She received a prison sentence of six to 15 years, plus 20 years on probation. She will receive credit for time served since her arrest more than two years ago.

Chittenden County State's Attorney T.J. Donovan said after the court proceedings were over that the state wanted the certainty of a conviction in a case in which two people were in the house at the time of Geraw's death. LaForce's former boyfriend, Tyler Chicoine, told police he saw LaForce shaking the child and banging his head on the floor.

"These are tough cases," Donovan said. "There were two people in that house that day. It was going to be a he said versus a she said case."

Pearson next asked prosecutor Susan Hardin to take the court through the facts of the case. She recounted Chicoine's testimony that he emerged from a shower to find LaForce shaking Peighton and banging the child's head against the floor because he wouldn't be quiet. Hardin said the state was asking the court to accept the plea deal.

"She will have to live with the knowledge her actions caused her baby's death, and will serve significant time in jail," Hardin said.
